We had the good fortune of connecting with Shannan Allen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shannan, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I’ve always had a love for fashion and working around other women I was always being complimented on what I wore or asked if I could help them shop because it was something they struggled with. As time went on I started to realize that there was a need for helping women through personal styling and I decided it was something that I wanted to pursue so I took a leap of faith and went for it.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I have a service based business called The Closet Consultant that provides personal styling and wardrobe editing to my clients.
The Closet Consultant is focused on helping women feel confident and own any room they enter by customizing each clients wardrobe needs to reflect their unique personal style that makes them look and feel great.
My journey that lead up to me owning my business was definitely not an easy one. I worked along side already established stylist as an intern learning everything I could about the business which entailed a lot of long days and late nights. Through this process I learned how cutthroat the industry was when it came to wardrobe styling, which is what I initially wanted to do working on video sets and magazines with artists and celebrities. I realized this wasn’t the direction I wanted to go in and mad the decision to stop.
I was definitely discouraged at that point and it wasn’t until several years later that I realized working with the everyday woman with her styling needs was actually my purpose and what I genuinely loved doing. From that point on I made the conscious decision that I would use the skills I learned from interning and taking courses to hone in on my craft and do what it was that I truly loved.
I also had lost my father very suddenly during this period of transition, this was an eye opener for me understanding that life is far to short not to do what you love in this world, and I valved from that moment on that I was going to use the gifts God gave me and jump out on faith.
I want people to know that I have a genuine love for helping women understand that they have to feel good about themselves from the inside out first and then this will show on the outside by the way the look and carry themselves. Being a personal stylist is so much bigger than clothes, it’s about style confidence and owning who you are and presenting yourself to the world as the best version of you. I want to be known for making women feel good about themselves and know that they can walk in any room and command it with their confidence and unique personal style.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was in town visiting I would take them to visit some places Philadelphia is known for like the famous Rocky statue and head down South Street where we can get a cheesesteak from Jim’s and head down Delaware Avenue to just take in the views and sit on the pier. We would head out to King of Prussia mall and have a little retail therapy and get our shop on. Lastly we would get dressed up and have drinks and dinner and one of favorite places Steak48 to end the night.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to all the stylist who mentored and helped me along this journey along with my close friends and family who encouraged me to live out my passion out loud.
