We had the good fortune of connecting with Shawneshia Stoneham and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shawneshia, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
For a long time, I sat on the idea of starting my brand before actually setting my doubts aside and going for it. I feel like very early entrepreneur has had their phase of doubts or in other words fear of failing. The way I overcame this phase is shutting out any inch of doubt in my mind and replacing them with motivating aspirations and encouragement to myself. First, I had to set goals for myself and identify what I actually wanted out of my brand. After, identifying that starting my brand would be great for my own self development, where I will be able to be an asset to myself and use my skills and qualities for the advancement of my own business, everything else came naturally. I began to realize that being a business owner was something I wanted to pursue and that I was good at it, I understood that not everyone will accept my ideas or even be on board with me throughout my journey and I accepted it. You have to be your own biggest fan is what I learned in the early stages of starting my business. That is what has gotten me this far.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Makeupchiq Cosmetics is a small black owned beauty and fashion brand tailored for makeup artists of all skill levels. We have established ourselves on larger social media platforms like Instagram and Twitter in as little as a year with over 1,000 followers and counting. We have been growing and reaching new and interested makeup artists and influencers everywhere with a common goal of becoming the best artists that they can be. What sets us aside from other beauty brands? We are more than a brand, we have established a community of like-minded makeup artists and influencers who need one thing… and that is to be connected with their purpose (makeup). The journey to get where we are today, was not easy. In fact, we are still on the journey as we speak. The job’s not done. We are still growing as a brand and building our community. However, to say we have surpassed our goals for a small black owned business during a pandemic is an understatement, All thanks to God! There has been tremendous struggles with funding, especially during the pandemic. I am ultimately responsible for my own funding with little to NO help usually and it gets hard maintaining the costs of a business no matter how small it is. The only thing that keeps me going everyday is my Faith. I know that God has a bigger purpose for my life and that my brand is apart of that purpose. I have to keep pushing and fighting while he handles all of the weight of my hardships. Nothing will get in the way of what He has planned for me, so I smile and keep moving forward. We have also established a strong social media marketing presence by delegating influencers of all follower counts to promote our products and spread awareness of our brand’s message of “Seeking no approval and doing what you love”. This has helped us grow the trust and loyalty as a brand. With this rapidly growing community we can become something more for the beauty industry! We have been looking into developing a Makeup Artist/Influencer directory-style app where we as artists will have our own social media platform without the anxiety of algorithms and the need to “Liked”. We will be eliminating the “Like” button completely on our app so that artists can create and post freely without the need for approval. We want to bring the passion back into creating. Other social media platforms can’t offer that.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in Orange County, CA. There is a lot great food places to check out. Such as a small Mom & Pop restaurant in Buena Park called Burgertown. They have pastrami sandwiches, chicken salads, teriyaki chicken and so much more. Also, if you’re looking for some fun in the sun, you might want to check out Newport Beach. It is beautiful there. They have boat rentals, bike rentals and ride attractions for kids. There are great malls in the area as well including The Outlets at Orange.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
As we all know, we can’t do anything in this world alone, Behind every successful business owner and is always group of supporters, family, and collaborators that have been a huge asset their start-up journey. My shoutout goes to each and everyone of my supporters who have always shown nothing but genuine love and support for what I do and my brand. Especially, to those of you who have ever donated to Makeupchiq Cosmetics, purchased and helped spread the word! Your love and support will never go unnoticed. Because of you, I continue to strive for success and when I win, we all win!
