We had the good fortune of connecting with Shayne Letford and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shayne, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve always been a very visual person. I learn visually. I frequently see patterns and styles. I also notice things that are out of place. When I was young, I noticed something interesting about how I perceived different people and companies that I had no previous interactions. Those that put their best foot forward and “looked” professional were more desirable and approachable to me, than those that “looked” unprofessional, or even boring. I saw billboards and fliers with blurry graphics and questionable color combinations and realized that I had an unnoticed bias against these companies compared to a well laid out design. Questions like, “What is the message that they’re trying to tell me?”, “How would I fix this?”, “Am I the only one who see this?” followed me for years until I finally decided to do something about it. Letford Media began when my need to help companies with their visual branding outweighed the fear of starting my own business. I needed to be a positive change that helped companies understand how important it is to dictate the way your customers see you through your forward-facing designs and messaging. I needed to be the person who brought others from confusing or underdeveloped messaging to concise, awe-inspiring, eye catching, customer grabbing visual branding. Letford Media has gone through several changes throughout the years, but ultimately our desire and responsibility is to “Put Your Brand Into Focus.”
What should our readers know about your business?
Have you ever been to Yosemite and looked up at the great sequoia trees? Have you had the chance to stand at the edge of the Grand Canyon? Even in pictures, you still feel the awe and wonder. Many of us even get the urge to be a part of that experience and go out exploring. An image or a good message can move our hearts and cause us to respond in certain ways. At Letford Media we have come to understand that concept and use it to help our clients. We use digital and print designs to change or enhance our client’s branding in order to increase their interaction with their target audience. The biggest challenge, though has been changing perspective. When we take someone’s vision and put it through the “Letford Media process”, it sometimes makes people uneasy. Change can be scary and trust is a marathon, but when the campaign rolls out and their company goals are being exceeded, it becomes all worth it.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would try to take my friend’s breath away at the very start of the day! We both love scenic areas and adventurous activities, so starting with an early morning hike would definitely be on the agenda. Santa Clarita has some truly beautiful trails that overlook some beautiful views. The hikes are serene, and the people are so friendly. Griffith Observatory also has some nice trails that are fun, as well as being a great place to hang out. To quench some of our thirst for adventure, we might go ziplining. I’ve been meaning to check out Ziplines at Pacific Crest. It’s surprisingly calming to feel the wind on your face while watching nature swiftly move beneath your feet. We’ve already been skydiving together, so ziplining would definitely be in our wheelhouse. As far as our stomachs, we’re really not foodies, but a trip to Black Angus or a good Brazilian Barbecue is a must.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to give great thanks to my wife. When I took the leap many years ago to start Letford Media, she was (and still is) my greatest cheerleader and encourager. There’s nothing more motivating than the honest words and loving push from the person you are the closest to. Thanks honey. I love you.
