Meet Shelley Rae Speck | Singer/Songwriter

We had the good fortune of connecting with Shelley Rae Speck and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shelley Rae, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
At the tender age of 12, I opened my mouth to sing and it sounded good! I had a dream of being a Pop Star from an early age. I pursued a career as a recording artist because it was my life’s dream. I entered the 7th-grade talent contest and won. I played guitar and sang. a Rolling Stone’s song “As Tears Go By”. From there I played original songs at the Iconic nightclub, The Troubadour. I was only 13 years old. I sang all through high school and college.
I began to get noticed for my original songs and did recordings for Warner Brothers Studios, A&M Records, and RCA Records. I loved the recording process. I love singing.
The most exciting thing about being a singer/songwriter is the opportunity to be a storyteller. My songs tell stories that are personal and true. When I was a young writer, I was more focused on telling MY side of the story. Now I write from a universal perspective. My second release contains 3 original songs. The EP is entitled “Free Range Stories”
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My goal in songwriting is to tell a good story. Personal or Universal doesn’t matter as long as the story is authentic. I have been lucky to have some commercial success and critical success. There are specific challenges in navigating the business side of music. The rejections never get easy but the rewards make up for it.
I overcome the rejections because I know I am following my heart, my true purpose.
I want to let the world know that when you want an authentic voice and a great song in the Pop/Country genre, look no further than Shelley Rae Speck!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’d love to show my best friend the myriad of hiking spots. Griffith Park, Echo Park, Runyon Canyon, Henninger Flats in Alta Dena and Angeles National Forest. I would love to show off the diversity of hiking trails and the massive wildlife that I frequently see. My guests will likely see deer, rattlesnakes, bears, bunnies, and squirrels or coyotes
After a good 3-5 mile hike, Ye Rustic Inn is a great place for a great burger and draft beer It’s on Hillhurst. House O’ Pies (also on Hillhurst) is a funky must for a freshly baked slice of homemade pie.
For hanging out, there are several smaller music venues like The Vermont Hollywood or the Hotel Cafe. Often you can catch major acts.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d love to shout out to Carolyn Olney who resides in Los Angeles. her encouragement has been unwavering. the music business can be very challenging and supportive friends are essential. I’d like to recognize Dominic Friesen as well. Dominic is also a Los Angeles resident and a brilliant publicist!
These two individuals have had my back for years and I am grateful and forever appreciative.
