We had the good fortune of connecting with MP Rabie and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi MP, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
In many ways I think risk is a way of discovering your true potential, a life void of all risk can’t be exciting at all. I want no part in that. There’s this saying that goes “The biggest risk someone can take is to do nothing.” and thus far this has proven true in my life. I took a big financial risk to study in the US but on top of that I put in the work and made great connections that lead to a flourishing career In the industry. Without risk I’d be working in a factory, doing a job I heavily dislike. Instead, now I’m living my best life, working with the best people and in the best industry.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I work in a very exciting part of the film industry known as previsualization, it’s very similar to layout animation but a little more fleshed out. To those not familiar with layout animation or previs, think of it as 3D animated story boards to plan out the film shot for shot. It’s a process that helps plan everything to the finest detail before hand so that when the time comes to film, everyone knows exactly what to do on set, from the action & mood, all the way to the lights & camera lenses.
We work closely with the Director and VFX supervisor to make sure we get their vision on screen before they hit the set.
I have on several occasions had my ideas go through to the screen and that is an awesome feeling, because I can point and say “That was my idea!”
There were a few obstacles in the way from achieving my ultimate goals, housing, covid, mental health & a few others but with enough drive and determination you can get through everything!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My and my friend Victor went on a Roadtrip to a small town in the mountains of California called Wrightwood. We went for the snow and only the snow, but it turned out to be far more incredible than I could’ve ever imagined! It felt like I was apart of a Christmas movie, all the lights and snow everywhere. As a South African you don’t often get to see snow, I’ve only seen it once before in Lesotho but that could barely pass as snow…
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a big shoutout to all my friends at The Third Floor Inc. and Day for Nite, my teammates at both studios have helped me tremendously in my life. I can’t name individuals because everyone contributed in some fashion.
I would also like to give a shout out to my family, Sanelle, Thinus, Linda, Kaede & Philip.
