We had the good fortune of connecting with Shelley Williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shelley, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
I opened the studio with the knowing that it was going to take a minute or two to get going:) Trying to get the word out about a crafts studio and getting people into the studio I learned are two different things. And at times, I was nervous… but because I knew in the beginning- that I would have these challenges, I prayed, meditated, talked myself out of it and kept showing up- even if only one person came to a workshop. When you make a decision to go big- I learned you also have to swallow your pride. That attitude helped me get through some tough days… and then I started gaining momentum. And was so happy! Perseverance paid off! And I enjoyed it- then COVID shut the studio down- just months after. I took some weeks off to decide what I was going to do. But giving up never crossed my mind- but thoughts of opportunity. And opportunities came. I thank God for the strength to push through. I am the strongest I have ever been and the happiest.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Shelley is an educator and creative. For twenty years, she taught students, trained teachers and leadership teams in a fulfilling career in education. During her career, to maintain life balance and joy she created soap, enjoyed knitting and other modern crafts. Throughout the years, imagining what opening an art studio would be like it led her on a journey to bridge her two passions: education and creativity. CRAFT + LIGHT opened in August 2019 on 2nd Street Naples Long Beach, CA. With a heart for community, CRAFT + LIGHT provides creative experiences that allow all to create, have fun and grow. In her personal time, Shelley is enjoys the beach, creating art in her art studio and spending time with her family in Southern California.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
It’s no secret that I am a passionate Christian- there’s a verse in the Bible that says “If you can believe all things are possible to him who believes.” I read that verse over and over for a year. And I got the courage to believe that I could open an arts studio, start a new life by the beach and I would be just fine. And it’s the life I live now. My mother is one of my best friends and closest confidants. I had a small renovation bidget for the studio and she would go to four or five Home Depots with me to find the flooring I needed- and we installed it together. She helps me set-up, run and break down at every event, she is constantly finding me the best deals for my supplies, she encourages me when I cry and she’s shouts to the world all of my happy moments. Every chance I get to celebrate her- I take the opportunity.
