We had the good fortune of connecting with Monjajaja and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Monjajaja, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
It could be meandering through the supermarkets, searching for culinary inspiration. Alongside my passion for illustration. cooking has become another source of joy in my life since moving to the UK, It’s a delightful way to shift my focus and indulge in a different creative outlet.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
what sets you apart from others?

My work is usually based on observation and I use different mediums and forms to explore the possibility of storytelling in illustration and animation from my surroundings. I enjoy the loosy and organic part of it, my working process is also quite fluid as I don’t make many plans.

what you are most proud of or excited about?

I’m proud and excited about a recent project I completed called “Elsewhere.” This project holds special significance as it marks my debut in animation. “Elsewhere” is a short film that delves into the experience of living in Kingston and forging a profound connection with the surroundings. It represents a fusion of technical experimentation, thematic depth, and the sheer joy of creating something distinctive and emotionally resonant.

How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy?

My professional journey has been a diverse and dynamic one. I majored in environmental design during my undergraduate and now I’m graduating with a master’s degree in illustration.

I’ve always had a sketchbook with me, and my love for keen observation has played a pivotal role. My creative journey is intrinsically tied to my surroundings. I find inspiration mostly in the world around me, allowing my work to capture the essence of the environment and inviting viewers into its realm.

One aspect of my professional life is that I work and live in the same space. While freelancing offers creative freedom, it can also bring financial instability. If I had a larger budget, I would choose to separate these two areas for a more balanced work-life setup.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Yes! My favorite restaurant in Kingston Al Forno Restaurant. Molto bene! And the gelato shop next door!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
A heartfelt shoutout to my parents for their unwavering support. While they may not fully grasp the intricacies of illustration, they wholeheartedly recognize my passion and have unwavering faith in my abilities.
