We had the good fortune of connecting with Sion Kim and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sion, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
Risk has played a big role in my life in general. I would credit risk as a big factor in how I’m able to freely create like I do now. Risk is sort of trusting what you don’t see at the moment, but believing enough that there’s something out there more for you. And while scared or worried, still taking that jump. You have to jump when you are overwhelmed with uncertainty before the logical part of your being stops you. Of course it’s scary, it’s supposed to be. If it wasn’t, it’d be called comfort. I’d encourage anyone to allow themselves to be uncomfortable for a time, it is okay to fail. Failing is the best teacher. Success does not teach you how failure can. Whether embarrassment, hardship, or trial–failing is necessary in growing. It’s a matter of failing and not failing to see the lesson hidden. And if it takes more than one failure to learn, then so be it. Coming through the other end, or even if you don’t– it gives the individual a chance to look back and say “I did that” or “I even got a chance to fail.” Looking back I gained the most from risks and countless failures. I would not have gained the things that I did, had I let fear or the majority stop me. All in all, I think risk is a beautiful thing and with practice it becomes calculated risks.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Ever since I was young I loved creating and making art. It became my first language to express as an immigrant struggling to learn both Korean and English. My art most importantly was a form of therapy that helped me express myself deeper and not used as some accessory. I am the most excited to say this artistic and creative journey found me and not the other way around. Lastly , the most important lesson would be that the longer you run away from yourself and purpose, you will end up losing sight of who you really are. Keep the viSION of what calls you, and don’t ignore that little voice that calls to create.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
To be honest my fun would be staying at home and bringing the fun or creating within the space I reside. For example cooking a new recipe or even tending to my garden outside with my doggo.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My broken home, my healing family, and everyone that gave me a chance and trust that currently walks around with a piece of my art on their own canvas. The true living art.

(Special thanks to Harrison for gifting me my first tattoo machine after telling me to not let go of art during my hardest times of quitting my stable job and T for being one of the biggest witness of my journey ground up after getting kicked out to chase my taboo dream.)
