We had the good fortune of connecting with Sky Hendrix and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sky, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I think honestly it chose me…. idk how to explain it, my moms used to play MTV JAMS as a kid and I was so into watching the music videos and singing all the songs, id be in my diapers, rapping and dancing to the songs that would come on TV. Even in school, I use to start breakdance battles like every day, I eventually got into music because I seen “The Rangers” go from jerking to music, I was like WAIT NAH THIS IS ME. I was writing songs, recording over the laptop on garage band till I was 15-16 and I had got sent to this college prep school or whatever, because I was messing up getting into trouble at my other high school(s) They ended up having this music program at the community college across the street and there was a studio, I kinda stopped going to school and just made music all day, either there or at my friends houses… I ended up meeting other artist at the college who ended up being real joints in the IE to this day. Ever since then though, I been recording, releasing music, doing crazy shows, producing, opened a recording studio in the IE, everything just fell on my lap.. its God ya know? honestly
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
First n foremost, I make all types of music, I began rapping as a kid, but as of now I been on my R&B/POP bag. My voice and melodies really are a forte in my music, make it catchy, but like make it hit home you feel? I try n always try n bring a song to life even if Its just a feature, ya dig? I try not to sound like anybody else either, I think that’s so saturated, it works for now, but what about later?? I also direct my music videos as well, whole story line too, something that people can be wowed by you know? I do most of my own production as well, I really try n do everything if I could. I think I’m most excited to drop consistently, I been cooped up in the studio for a few years just recording and learning more and more about music just doing that excites me.
I got where im at just by hard work you know? Being/hitting up the right people etc. but most importantly good music, I dropped this peaches and cream freestyle in 2019 and everything just went up, a few years later I got my own studio, opened up for Different huge artists its kinda cool now when you think about it
IS THIS JOB EASY?? NOO!! It is its fun, but I’ve had my ups and downs in this music, in 2021 I went through a weird writers block as you can say, and I just wasn’t making anything as you can say, “good’ in my eyes for almost the whole year, I think just staying inspired and consistent the hardest part and funds… whooo, the biggest lesson I can say is save up your dough and go outside and live life don’t get stuck doing one thing, go out and party sometimes or watch a movie at the movies idk.. little things can make something… BIG
I want the world to know that I make great music, music for everyone, just an all around entertainer.. As I progress.. I want everyone to see what I’ve gone through and see that you can do it too!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
