Meet Skylisha Vasquez | Author & Poet

We had the good fortune of connecting with Skylisha Vasquez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Skylisha, why did you pursue a creative career?
I pursued an artistic and creative career because it allows me to express my emotions, thoughts, and experiences in a specific way. Writing has helped me process and understand the world around me. Through writing and poetry, I can connect with others on a deep, emotional level, offering them a sense of shared experience. Writing has always allowed me to explore my own growth while inspiring others to embrace their creativity and authenticity, giving a voice to the unspoken.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is deeply rooted in my personal experiences, and it is a reflection of the resilience and strength I’ve developed throughout my life. As a Latina woman growing up in challenging neighborhoods, born in Brooklyn, N.Y and raised in Staten Island, N.Y. I have often faced adversity but I channeled those struggles into creative expression. Writing poetry and children’s books became my way of processing my emotions and experiences, allowing me to not only understand myself better but also to connect with others who might feel the same. My work centers around themes of overcoming obstacles, embracing one’s identity, and finding strength through community and creativity.
What sets me apart is the authenticity of my voice. My writing is shaped by my unique perspective as a Latina woman, navigating the complexities of family, culture, and self-discovery. I draw on my own journey of resilience by finding light in dark times and using storytelling as a tool for healing. I believe that storytelling, especially in children’s books, can help shape the future by fostering empathy and understanding in young readers.
What excites me the most is knowing that my work can make a difference in a child’s life, helping them feel seen, understood, and empowered.
Getting to where I am today professionally has not been easy. Growing up in difficult circumstances, there were times when I doubted myself and my ability to succeed, I now have the support of my partner and four children that have assisted heavily. I’ve learned that perseverance along with a deep belief in GOD, can help overcome any challenge. I’ve also learned the importance of staying true to myself and my roots, as my unique experiences and culture are what fuel me.
The journey hasn’t been without its hurdles, but the challenges have only made me more determined. Through every setback, I’ve gained a greater understanding of my craft and my purpose. The lessons I’ve learned along the way are invaluable: resilience is key, self-belief is vital, and your story matters, no matter where you come from.
What I want the world to know about me and my brand is that my art is a reflection of my journey, my culture, and my love for writing. It’s my way of breaking down barriers, sharing experiences, and giving a voice to those who may feel invisible. I hope that my work inspires others to write and embrace their own stories, to believe in their worth, and to always keep creating, no matter the obstacles life may present.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Topanga Social is a cool, family-friendly venue. It’s a vibrant gathering place that blends entertainment, food, and a relaxed atmosphere, making it a great spot for families and friends to enjoy a fun outing and also The Santa Monica Pier which is a classic family spot with an amusement park, aquarium, arcade, and has beautiful beach views of the Pacific Ocean. There’s also plenty of food and shopping, which makes it perfect for anyone trying to have a good time.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My writing is fueled by the love and support of my family. My four amazing, silly, loving, and creative children that inspire me daily, and their unwavering support has helped me through some of my darkest days. My partner has also been a constant source of encouragement, he has always pushed me to keep writing, even when I doubted myself. It is because of them that I continue to write stories and poems that inspire others. Thriving as they continue to remind me of the importance of using my words and my voice to uplift and connect with others. Through my work, I create stories that help children understand their emotions and experiences while fostering creativity, kindness, and empathy. My family’s love has truly been my driving force.
