Meet Sofia Martinez | Actor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sofia Martinez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sofia, why did you pursue a creative career?
I’ve always felt different in a way. I’ve always seeked expression and I’ve always wanted to feel more than what daily life offers.
Since I was a child I would always love to play, I would play with dolls and barbies, play at the courtyard with my friends, play to the scary mansion with my older brother. I also loved talking to people.
I’d hate sitting down at a desk and studying. That made me fail some classes but luckily my parents were cool with it. My mom always believed that going to the playground with my friends was going to teach me more in life than studying Math the whole afternoon. And I am grateful for that now. Because I can still play and use my childlike spirit in a daily basis.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started in Musical Theater and dance. That was my biggest passion. Musical Theater allowed me to be big and loud, things that were not encouraged in my culture as little girl.
I never thought of doing art as a career until I was 18 years old and I met Gabriela Garcia a mexican actress in her debut as Maria in West Side Story in London. I talked to her after being absorbed by the performance and I asked her what I had to do to be able to do what she did. We went to a coffee shop and I remember she gave me a list of schools, of musicals to learn about and tips for auditioning and how to prepare.
Next thing I remember I was auditioning for AMDA Los Angeles and I got accepted.
The biggest challenge for me has been moving to the USA, learning a new language and adapting to a different culture. Showing up to classes and being told to change my accent constantly.
Another challenge after graduating college has been the uncertainty of being an artist, but this is something that will always be a part of the journey so now I get to learn to get excited by that uncertainty.
Now I feel passionate about the art of storytelling and its power to transform your heart and the heart of others through the heightening of the human experience.
Right now I am working at a Play (Yerma) by Federico Garcia Lorca which I am very excited about. There I get to play the role of a Man (Victor) and others. I am grateful for the opportunity to work with Foolish Production Company and with the amazing director Jahel Corban in this project. This will be playing every Saturday in September at the Broadwater theater in Hollywood.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The best part of any city for me its the theater. I go by myself sometimes or with company. I literally save my money to go the theater.
But in LA I would definitely take someone I love to hike at malibu or pasadena, or to the beach. In my opinion, there is nothing better than nature for a recharge.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My parents are my super heroes. They’ve supported my dream since day one and they believe in myself as well as I do.
Right now I get the most encoragement at the studio The Imagined Life were I get to learn Diana Castle’s teachings on storytelling and empathy through my incredible mentor Lacy Fisher.
