Meet Somesh Yatham | Composer for Media

We had the good fortune of connecting with Somesh Yatham and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Somesh, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Obviously, I enjoy making music and that’s been a big factor. However, there’s also this innate satisfaction that comes in getting a strong audience reaction to your work, and this is one of the only professions where I can really impact the way someone feels. Whether it’s through working in tandem with a film or through a more concert setting, I absolutely love the idea that we as artists can elevate the way people think about a certain theme or message.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m still a student, so I still have quite a bit to learn, but a lot of my music revolves around creating atmospheres and more ambient environments that utilize a very sound design approach to scoring. As a result, I’ve also started doing a lot of explicit sound design work as well. As a previous marching band percussionist, rhythm also tends to be an important factor in my compositions and has definitely informed my process in creating more textural soundscapes. To me, it’s always about making music that feels larger than life and more than “just music.”
As for challenges I’ve faced, finding a proper work-life balance has always been my biggest struggle. With engaging in such a risky career, I find that I just inadvertently guilt myself every time I’m not working. It’s tricky because at the end of the day, working all the time has technically been amazing for my career, but I know deep down, it’s not a long term solution. Thankfully, I’ve started to get to the point where I can really choose what project to pursue, and I’ve found that transitioning into simply giving my all on the projects I only really care about is much more fulfilling and healthier.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Honestly, my favorite moments in New York have always been from venturing into a new street or area I haven’t been to before. There’s always new food and activities at every turn here, so it feels impossible to be bored. In other words, the best plan is no plan!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
It’s a little cliche, but I can’t understate just how significant my parents were to my development as a composer. They worked incredibly hard to come from India and provide for a family, only for their first child to venture into a completely unknown and relatively risky industry. Despite this, they’ve continued to support me through the ups and downs, and I definitely not be here without them.
