We had the good fortune of connecting with Sonez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sonez, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
To an outsider’s perspective I’m probably considered a risk taker, but from my point of view, I don’t actually feel like I’ve taken huge risks in my life and career. All I’ve done is follow my gut when it comes to what I feel I’m supposed to do. Whether it be quitting my corporate job to go full time with music, releasing my first solo album without any label or team, or deciding to make the big move to LA – these were all choices that seemed risky to others, but made perfect sense to me.

Yes, being a singer and creating art is largely considered a risky path, but I would argue it’s not as risky for someone who is built for it and has been training their whole life for it. So when I think about risk, I find it to be largely based on one’s point of perception. It’s absolutely important to get outside of your comfort zone to learn new things that evolve yourself and your work, but from my experience these risks or these leaps often hold a sense of safety in the form of knowingness despite how uncertain things can seem.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

I love making music that makes people feel seen and feel good. Pop music has always been the genre that did that for me, so I’ve always been drawn to creating that type of music myself.

My most recent project, “20something”, was a feel-good inspirational pop album about navigating life and love in my twenties. You hear it in the lyrics, but I was always extremely positive and hopeful amidst some really deep pain during that time. After writing most of the songs to just vent about my experiences, as I worked on the production, I knew I wanted the album to sound really vibey and fun. My intention was for listeners to be able to heal their heart without realizing it.

Now that it’s been over a year since my album, I’m so eager and excited to put out new music! My next song, “The Moment” comes out on October 27th and is so different from anything I’ve ever released. The vibe is a lot moodier than music I’ve put out in the past and falls in line with the type of house/EDM music I’ve been obsessed with in recent years. I’m really excited for people to hear it!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am a big tourist at heart! I would probably just use my best friend visiting as an excuse to go on Hollywood studio tours, see museums, and things of that sort. Oh, and I love a good coffee shop. Between seeing the sights, I’d probably make a stop at every Blue Bottle along the way!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My parents! I would have not made it this far if it wasn’t for their love and support.
