We had the good fortune of connecting with Sonia Hare and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sonia, every day, we talk about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
When I first started on my journey in the fitness and health industry, I looked at the different avenues and options for a career path. I could join a big box gym and have them feed me clients, I could get an internship at a private training facility, I could be a group fitness instructor at an established studio, all options that would allow me to get my foot in the door, and build my business while working for someone else. I ultimately decided that I wanted to be my own boss. I didn’t want to help build someone else’s business, I wanted to build my own. I was not naive to the challenges this would bring but I was determined to make it happen. Having grown up in my parent’s fitness center, and spent much of my life studying fitness and wellness, I was clear on how I wanted to train my clients and confident in what I could offer them. So 1 by 1, my clientele grew, mostly by word of mouth, some through social media marketing, and eventually through my website.

My website, TheSoniaSeries.com came to life during the beginning of the pandemic. The fitness industry, like many others, had to majorly pivot to adapt to the lockdown. I was suddenly training all my clients over Zoom out of my home and offering free classes on IG live when it seemed everyone in the world was tuning into IG Live to get some sort of human interaction! I quickly realized I could get people results from their homes through live classes and On-Demand challenges and programs. The Sonia Series has been growing and evolving ever since, and now includes options for nutrition coaching as well. It has allowed me to connect with people all over the world.

The Signature Series, a more personalized approach to the online fitness space, is the most popular monthly membership that I offer. I came up with the idea for the Signature Series because getting in shape is not always a 1-size-fits-all approach. Since my background is in personal training, I know this first hand. It takes committing to a specific program to see real, lasting results and that program might look different from person to person. At the end of the day we all need to do some form of strength training, cardio, and eat a healthy balanced diet, but the details can vary from person to person, based on their lifestyle, genetics, age, ect. The Signature Series includes one on one goal setting and nutrition coaching sessions that allow my members to meet with me and create their personalized plans.

There is no “secret sauce” to getting in shape, and many people waste time and money trying program after program with the promise that “this one will work for you!” and ultimately end up feeling defeated and unsuccessful. It’s about learning how to make it work for your lifestyle. I’m all about working smarter, not harder. People are busy, and we get decision fatigue quickly, so I wanted to take the guesswork out of getting in shape. With social media, there’s a bit of information overload going on, and it can feel overwhelming and confusing when choosing a program or trainer. That’s ultimately what led me to create the Signature Series. I’m in the business of improving lives and helping people achieve results and that was at the forefront of my mind while creating this membership program.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My online business, The Sonia Series offers online workout classes and nutrition coaching sessions. Something that sets the Sonia Series apart from so many other online workout programs is that my classes focus on building strong, lean bodies through strength training. There is a lot of “Pilates-based, dance, body weight, and yoga” programs, but not much in terms of strength training. My website also offers a more personalized approach to online training. I offer live and On-Demand classes, and challenges, as well as one on one coaching sessions to help people create a personalized program.

In addition, I do in-person personal training sessions in the Santa Monica and West Hollywood area. My approach is based on helping people to build lean muscle mass and drop body fat through strength training, with proper stretching and recovery. It’s about feeling good as much as it is looking good. Quick results can be painful and short-lived. I want clients to create life-long habits and get results that will last. If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Some of my favorite spots in LA include: -Issima for a girls night out or date night. Located in the La Peer hotel, the food, the decor and the vibes are all excellent.

-Topgana Canyon has some amazing hiking trails and feels like a little escape from LA.

-Erewhon for lunch or dinners to-go. I frequent Erewhon way too much, but like my programs, Erewhon takes the guess-work out of eating healthy. Their food is high quality, has fresh ingredients, and tastes amazing. And has a pretty price tag to match.

-Griffith Park if people are visiting- we get jaded on it or take it for granted living here, but it is so beautiful and has amazing information about space and the earth we live on.

-Palisaded Village on a Sunday – there is always a farmer’s market, the best shops and cute restaurants plus they have an Erewhon

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My parents definitely led by example. They are both entrepreneurs in the fitness industry and while they never pressured me to go into the biz, I think ultimately I was inspired by them. My dad always reminds me, we are in the business of improving people’s lives and that’s priceless. They are very proud and supportive. My fiancé also deserves a shoutout because he was the one that really pushed me to make a career out of my passion. He did not allow me to give in to the self-doubt that comes along with starting your own business.
