We had the good fortune of connecting with Sonki Hong and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sonki, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Prior to starting my company Sonki Fitness, I was working as a successful tech executive making a nice living. However, I was never quite satisfied with what I was doing. I didn’t wake up in the morning excited about what I was about to do and didn’t go to bed at night feeling great about what I did. I thought to myself, “we only have one chance at life, so why go through it doing something that doesn’t have much meaning to me just to make money?” So I started doing some soul searching on what my purpose in life is and what truly makes me happy. I had always wanted to start my own company, so I started to ask myself these questions. What am I passionate about? What am I good at? What makes me happy? It was pretty clear getting into health and fitness field was my true calling in life. I had always been passionate about fitness and helping others, and have extensive background in sports and fitness. Ultimately, I took a leap of faith and launched Sonki Fitness. It was not only life changing but also the best decision I’ve made in my life.
What should our readers know about your business?
Sonki Fitness is one of the most successful and longest running boot camps in the world created by a 5-time World Fitness Champion and former US Army Captain Sonki Hong. What makes it unique and special is that the program uses a positive and fun approach to inspire clients to get in top shape in beautiful outdoor settings. I created the program based on my real elite military training and experience working with people from all walks of life, so it is the fastest and most effective way to get in total body shape for all levels. Over 5000 people from all walks of life have successfully graduated from the program since 2002.
What I’m most proud of is that we’ve created a happy supportive Sonki Fitness community where everyone is friendly, supportive, and respectful of one another. We’ve had people who met through Sonki Fitness become best friends, get married, become business partners, and so much more. In our current world where there’s so much anger and hatred, I’m grateful that our clients can come to Sonki Fitness and always expect positive energy and happy faces. I think the main reason we’ve been successful since 2002 is that we provide a service that provides genuine value to people’s lives. Any company can sell a product once, but if it doesn’t add much value, they will not get a repeat sale. Companies like Apple and Chick-fil-A do well because they are able to retain their customers through valuable products. Similarly, we have been able to maintain the highest retention rate in our industry by not only providing great service but also cultivating a personal relationship with our clients. Many of our clients have been with us for 15, 16, 17, and even 18 years!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them on a hike at Temescal Canyon followed by lunch at Gladstone’s. Then take them to Venice beach to see all the interesting people and shops followed by a quick drink at the Hotel Irwin rooftop bar. Then walk through the Santa Monica Promenade to see shops and entertainers. Sunset drinks/dinner/dancing at the Penthouse.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to give a shoutout to all of my loyal and dedicated Sonki Fitness Warriors since 2002!
