Meet Sophia Nguessan: Behaviorist, Fitness Coach & Owner of SFS Active

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sophia Nguessan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sophia, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
The world could always use some extra love! And working at the community level, I help by promoting good health and making fitness a lifestyle. Through my business SFS Active, I coach, train and motivate women along their fitness journeys. My focus, when coaching clients is not so much about a number on a scale, but how it makes the client feel which works wonders on self-esteem and confidence. I feel so honored and happy when women share their incredible journeys with me. It’s also an amazing feeling to hear when clients are feeling physically better and stronger.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I broke my foot a few years ago and I had to stay at home for a couple of months with my kids, 2 and 4 years old. That was a tough turning point in my life. From there I became passionate and motivated to coach women, especially mothers at home with their children. My passion for working with children and women directed me towards being a children’s Behavioral Therapist for children with Autism and a Women’s Fitness Coach.
Although these past few years have not been easy, I am very proud of how far I’ve come personally and professionally. The tough moments in life teach me more about myself. I’ve learned to sit and work through those uncomfortable moments, usually before a personal life transition. I’ve also learned to really carve out time for myself to be alone and to not feel bad about giving myself that time. I think carving out time for self is most important, especially as a mother.
I can say that I am proud of myself for staying consistent when it comes to my business, my fitness journey and my professional work life as a Behavioral Therapist. It also feels very good when I’m recognized by many for being passionate, flexible and caring when it comes to my professional work and business.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Los Angeles has many cool locations to eat and hang out. If a friend or family member were to visit, I would take them to my happy places. Scenic hikes out in San Bernardino, Altadena and North of Santa Monica. Laguna Beach with its beautiful scenery and the Griffith Observatory which is nice towards the evening time. Hae Jang Chon Korean BBQ Restaurant or as I call it “6th Street BBQ” because its on 6th street in Koreatown .. one of my favorite places to pig out 🙂

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I thank GOD for blessing me with patience and the ability to work and connect with people. I thank all of my clients who have been sticking with me, I thank my mom and supportive family members and I thank friends local and a far who have been cheering me on with so much love!
