We had the good fortune of connecting with Sophie French and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sophie, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Being real, being true to myself and others, and speaking and sharing from my heart and building relationships with others from that place. The work I do is because it deeply means something to me and I think that can be felt through others – while I have extensive training in my areas of expertise, the piece that people are most drawn to is the honesty, the expression of my lived experiences and them therefore feeling less alone and confused in the world. It builds a sense of trust and allows people to have an experience that me and my work are tried and true and that I do, and my brand does, what it says it will. It will always be from the heart and that feels like the beauty and magic of it.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I run a holistic healing and coaching practice where I support women to back themselves instead of attack themselves and to uncover and rewire their self-worth issues into self-loving words, thoughts, actions and behaviours towards themselves, through a variety of healing modalities, so that they can see that reflected in their external world – their family, their relationships, their work, their art, their creativity, their financials.
I’m most proud of and excited about having clients that I work with over years, through varying stages of their lives and journeys. When clients come back for specific coaching in a new area or phase of their life, it’s such testament to the work and an honour to be by their side through! I’m most excited the fact that I’ve been in business 10 years and there’s still so much love for my work and it still feels like it’s only just the beginning of the impact I can make and the people I can support!
It definitely hasn’t been easy! The main challenge in the beginning was learning how to manage my own time, discipline and motivation in order to work for myself for this long – hiring mentors and coaches to keep me on track and accountable has been truly supportive and I totally wouldn’t be where I am now without them! The second challenge would be maintaining belief in myself and the work and showing up through all seasons, even when things aren’t going to plan, or when there are things like pandemics to contend with – tons of mindset work and being connected to my bigger vision and purpose has always helped to overcome those challenges of self-doubt and self-questioning and being committed to the journey no matter what.
The lessons I’ve learned along the way include that going into business for yourself can be the biggest growth and personal development journey ever! You run life in a different way to anything you’ve specifically been taught and because there’s no forged path, you’ve often got to figure things out for yourself. There has definitely been a lot of trial and error involved, and a lot of setbacks and having to move through many emotions and fears – but it all becomes worth it when you know what you’re building and when it becomes easier and fulfilling and you see the impact of the work you do.
I want the world to know about my brand and story that living freely and authentically and doing whatever you can to follow the pulse of your own heart – no matter what society says or what you’ve been ‘taught’ is essential to feeling fulfilled and building your sense of self-esteem, self-trust and self-love in the world. It can be really hard to tune in and listen to yourself in a world FULL of distractions and advice and ‘shoulds’ – but my work is about supporting people, particularly women, to hear the call of their own souls, to be able to listen, to follow and trust their intuition and to forge their own unique path.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d start by showing her around Sawtelle Avenue, Japan Town and its many incredible noodle sushi and Korean BBQ spots, also, the legendary ramen restaurant Itzuki.
Breakfast at the trendy Gjusta bakery or at the Sidewalk Café on Venice Boardwalk. Le Pain Quotidien on Maxella Avenue in Marina del Rey has the best croissants in town!
In the afternoon, walk along the Venice Canals and end the evening with a fine dining experience at Piccolo on Abbot Kinney Boulevard.
I’d take us on a visit to the Arts District and Historic Core which have trendy bars, rooftop lounges, and clubs. I also love the hipster vibe of Silver Lake, which has a range of bars, music venues, and restaurants for a younger crowd.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d love to give a shoutout to my first ever mentor Louise George – she was the first person I feel like I found in my life, around 10 years ago, that was speaking my language, that was talking to the part of me that knew she felt different, wanted more from life, and she supported me to find and access that vision and start to believe it was possible from me from the very beginning. She was pivotal in me coming to know my dreams and find my bravery in those early business years.
