We had the good fortune of connecting with Keilyn Licona and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Keilyn, other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
To me the most important decision that contributed to my success was continuing to stay ambitious and motivated throughout my journey. Through all the trials and tribulations that we all unfortunately have to go through , I have always decided to stay hungry, stay consistent, and motivated so that I can be successful. Even with all the curveballs life has thrown in my direction, I always made a way because I have been ambitious and I know I have a main goal to achieve. I believe being a single mother of 3 children kept me motivated because I want to break generational curses, I want my children to experience life completely with no worries. I started working when I was 11 years old, selling newspaper and candies because I watched my single mother of 9 children struggle so much, looking back at struggles and poverty we came from, I always knew I had to work. I would say I’ve always had a job. But at one point I decided to use my creativity to build my own business or businesses. I want to build a generational wealth for my children and my family as well. I know that it’s going to take a lot of work because I have yet to accomplish my goal but I’d rather put That work into myself and my success than working for a large corporation that pays me a Buck. Rapper Nipsey Hussle and I quote him “dedication, hard work plus patience”, I agree that is a way to one’s success.
What should our readers know about your business?
Kickin’ Kays Cajun Seafood is a family constructed business. I have always had a passion for cooking and I love seafood. I wanted to share Cajun seafood done the Kickin way. I think what sets me apart from others is that I am unique with my business, my sauce is one of a kind and I just want everyone to enjoy it. I am mostly proud of where I am headed with my business and how much we have grown. I have been studying business in college for about two years so I know a little of the foundation to building it. Growing in my business has not been the easiest but we are getting to where we need to. Sometimes its all about learning from your mistakes and coming back harder. I have learned how to work as a team with my family. I learned to be considering of people’s budgets, I learned to network with orders in order to create great things. I want the world to know that we are all capable of reaching our goals if we just keep striving and not get discouraged. I would love for you guys to check us out.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my bestfriend was in town I would definitely take her to view the beaches in Los Angeles. My favorite beach to visit is White point beach and Sunken city in San Pedro, Ca. While being in San Pedro we would definitely visit the San Pedro Fish Market and enjoy a huge Lobster. I would take her to the views at nighttime enjoy some night life in LA. We would visit Schooner or Later which is my favorite brunch place in Long Beach. We can hike the culver city stairs for a little work out. We would go to Hollywood and Venice beach and meet other people. For dinner we would go to the Perch in DTLA to enjoy the downtown views. Being from LA, I really just enjoy our different views of the city, the beaches, how much fun it is to go to Venice and watch people sing, act, or dance, connect with small businesses so we can support each other.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to shoutout to my children Isaiah, Alyssah and Ahmir. They deserve all the credit in the world for always keeping me complete, being appreciative to me, motivating me and being the reason why I am successful. If it wasnt for my children, life wouldnt be so meaningful, they push me to greatness so they always deserve credit.
