We had the good fortune of connecting with Srey & Kai Khoy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Srey & Kai, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Our authenticity is unique and is the heart of our success. We don’t pretend to be a warm, loving couple and committed family—we truly are who we say we are.

This is what’s so refreshing when people find out we’ve been married over twenty years and that two of our four kids (18 &15) work with us. They want to support small businesses like ours and to see our family thrive.

When you come to Skai Coffee it feels like visiting friends who happen to make great coffee and desserts. Such an experience is due to who we are and how we connect with others.

That’s the “secret” for any successful brand, to take what is unique to you and share that with the world.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
We are a mom and pop business, which isn’t something you see much anymore. We know many of our customers by name, we know their drinks and preferences, and we prioritize connection, consistency, and quality.

We are most proud of the community we’ve built. We are grateful to those who come every week to visit us, and are thankful to play a part in their lives.

Getting to this stage in our business wasn’t easy. We came from the corporate world, so there was definitely a learning curve. The sheer physicality of running a mobile coffee shop like ours requires all of us to be as strong and healthy as possible.

We learned so many lessons, such as learning to work with our spouse, resolving conflict quickly, being flexible, responding appropriately to setbacks and changes, and how to utilize our resources.

We want the world to know that small family businesses can still exist and thrive in today’s difficult landscape. It’s not easy, but being able to take care of our family in this way has brought so much freedom and happiness.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Here are the best spots to take our friends if they visited:

Hang out: Universal City Walk, Universal Studios, Knotts Berry Farm, Amoeba Music, Little Tokyo, especially Kinokuniya Bookstore, Griffith Observatory, Huntington Library, Flapper’s Comedy Club, Downtown Burbank Cultural Market

Food: Pinche’s Tacos, Louder’s, Quarter’s, and the rest of that area in Korea Town, Finney’s Crafthouse, Kopan Ramen, Moana Hawaiian Barbecue, Ameci Pizza and Pasta, Porto’s, Blossom Market Hall

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We would not be where we are today without the love and support of our Skai Coffee community, our family members (especially Mom and Jo), Vanessa Comfort, Aaron Texeira, Alex Darghali, and our most precious treasure: our kids (P, Sey, Bubs & Dubs).
