We had the good fortune of connecting with Star Rolle and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Star, how do you think about risk?
Taking risks is a major part in my career. My last article with VoyageLa, I was in a position where I had to make a choice whether I wanted to quit working in sales permanently to pursue a career in software engineering. This is one of the biggest risks I have ever taken. I knew I need to make a shift in focus if I was ever going to get out of the cycle that I was in. It ended up being worth the gamble.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
When the pandemic hit, I was laid off from my job last minute. I was forced to find a means of income on a short notice. I had nothing to lose so I started a natural hair care website called thecurlstop.com. I started out with one product and now today my store has over 33 items. Once I got the store set up to where it only takes me 2 hours a week to manage, I decided to take a leap of faith and pursue my new passion full time. Equipped with half of a computer science degree and some freelance experience, I decided to take an immersive full time 12 week coding bootcamp. I pushed myself beyond what I thought was possible at that time. Here I was a mother of 2 girls, working and coding more than 10 hours daily. It was a very lengthy process. I ended up being at the top of my class and received a job offer when the course still had 3 weeks left. I believe that the most important thing when pursuing any goal is to keep making progress until you’re done. Don’t give up when things get stressful because all things worth having are worth fighting for.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my friend was in town for the weekend I would take him to the tourist places first. People always love going to places like Hollywood or Beverly Hills when they come to Los Angeles. I would then take him to the hidden gems. There are places like The Highlight Room or Bottega Louie where you only really know about them if you’re in Los Angeles for longer than just one weekend. I’m a big fan of places like The Last Bookstore in DTLA and Moo Dai Po Korean BBQ as well.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to credit my mom, dad, uncle and God for having positive influences in my life. I also recently read Atomic Habits and I would like to shout-out that book because it has changed my life tremendously. I am now making daily progress towards my goals.
