We had the good fortune of connecting with Stelle Oettler and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Stelle, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
This is a very interesting question because I think that we are all trying to live our lives but at the same time make a living. And it’s not easy to find that balance, ultimately the dream would be to make a living doing something you love so work doesn’t feel like work, but even if you are fortunate enough to make a living doing something you love, there are still tiny details that we have to deal with that we might not enjoy. The way I find balance is by listening to my body, if I get any signal of discomfort I try to ask myself, what is my body trying to tell me? Before, I would not get any sleep even if I needed it just so I could get ahead on an assignment, and this only led me to feel like I was pushing myself to a limit, that kind of stress made my mind go everywhere but the present. Thankfully I’ve learned how to manage this but it takes time, because it’s your old self against your healthy self. Giving yourself time to do the things you love, even if it’s for 30 minutes, will always be worth it, and I’m not talking about being on your phone, I’m talking about making memories that make life worth living.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I would say it’s hard to describe my craft because I think actors are ever-changing and ever-evolving, our art is tied to our experiences, what happens in our lives plays a big role in our approach to acting. At this point in my life, I’m a very committed actor, I am at a place where I have to make a lot of important choices, and funny enough acting is all about choices, so my goal lately has been to make very specific choices and commit to them, but at the same time keep an open mind and grant the space to adjust to whatever it is the story I’m telling, or my life needs. Life and acting blend into one.

I think no journey is a straight line going up, I’ve had to deal with a lot of challenges, but here are some of the lessons I’ve learnt in simple terms: 1. Trust your instinct. 2. Do the work and then let things be. 3. Adapt, don’t try to control everything. 4. Have fun and enjoy where you’re at, you might miss this exact moment one day.

What I want people to know about my story is that dreams do come true and they come in very unexpected ways. I always dreamed of living in New York and that dream became my reality, I trained as an actor at the Stella Adler Center for the Arts and met people who I now consider my family and great colleagues. I now live in Los Angeles and it still feels like a privilege to have worked inside Hollywood studios, be the lead in independent short films, and call myself a professional. There are still so many things I want to achieve but I know I am where I need to be.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love the outdoors, and being active, I am always happiest when I’m outside, so there would be a lot going on. I would take them to Manhattan Beach, Santa Monica, Venice Beach and Malibu. At some point in the week I would take them to Runyon Canyon, the Hollywood Sign, Temescal Gateway Park, Silverlake Meadows, and Griffith Observatory. I would also take them to the Los Feliz Theatre for a vintage movie theater experience. And food I would take them to anywhere that’s near us, I don’t like to be picky with food, some of the best spots I’ve found have been by chance.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are so many people who have been part of my story, but a big step for my acting journey has been thanks to the Stella Adler Center for the Arts.
