We had the good fortune of connecting with Stephanie Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Stephanie, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process has definitely shifted throughout this experience. At the start, dyeing yarn was to be a small hobby. It soon became something I can’t imagine living without. Not only do I thoroughly enjoy the process and the way I’m able to combine my creativity with something scientific in nature, but I thrive on the sense of community I now have as a side effect of running this business. Hearing stories and seeing customers’ creations – it gives me all the warm fuzzies, and I live for it.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think one thing that makes me unique as a dyer is my actual dye technique. There are only so many ways this can be done, but I found the method that not only works for me in terms of process and work space, but that gives me the types of colors I’m trying to achieve. I have taken dye classes from some of the best and have done a lot of reading and research on the topic, but to some extent, I threw it all to the wayside and developed my technique through trial and error.

I enjoy super saturated and super bright colors. I do dye pastels and neutrals, but to be honest, most of the time I dye these to pair with the true stars of the show, which are my jewel tones and neons.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I spent the last 11 years in New York City and just moved to Stratford, Connecticut this past summer. I’m still getting to know the area, but I do have a few places I have to share with my friends and family. Zuppardi’s Apizza is absolutely the best pizza I have ever had, even after living in both New Haven and New York! They’re located in West Haven, but also served at The Hops Company, which is a great hangout spot for beer lovers. I took my brother there and we had a great time. In the summer, Long Beach in Stratford is the perfect oasis for a quiet, relaxing moment of sun and great for swimming, too.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Thomas Gregory Hamilton, aka Gregory Stitch. I had the pleasure of dyeing yarn for one of his couture crochet designs and have enjoyed watching him get the recognition he SOOO deserves. He is an inspiration to so many and a fantastic designer and human!
