We had the good fortune of connecting with Stephanie Ward and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Stephanie, every day, we talk about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
During my time as a Cal-Learn Eligibility Worker for the County of San Bernardino back in 2011, some of the teen parents and their own parents shared with me the unhealthy parenting they’ve experienced. This revelation fueled my passion to create a supportive space for parents and caregivers by offering evidence-based parent education to equip parents during the most challenging moments of parenthood.
My parent educator journey began once I completed my certification and accepted the position as a Parent Educator at a non-profit agency in Los Angeles County. However, I soon realized that something was missing; my fulfillment was hindered by limited access to diverse communities and the constraints of the services provided. Driven by my passion to make a meaningful difference, I took a bold step and ventured into the realm of entrepreneurship. I knew nothing about owning a business. However, I overcame this hurdle by actively engaging with networking groups that not only connected me with like-minded individuals but also helped me increase awareness of my company, Stand Tall Parenting.
As my enterprise continues to flourish, I discovered new avenues to support parents and caregivers by organizing community events and speaking at conferences that allowed me to make a positive impact on even more families.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I founded Stand Tall Parenting (STP) to strengthen families and promote healthy parenting practices. It fills me with pride to reflect on the journey I’ve traveled to bring my business to its current state. I’ve accomplished so much this year! I completed my second Infant Massage USA conference, hosted my first Empowerment Event, and now have the privilege of being featured in Voyage LA magazine. As the first person in my family to obtain a college degree, I am driven by the desire to establish a lasting legacy for future generations, instilling the belief that we can make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.
I always knew that I wanted to make a difference by helping people. Creating Stand Tall Parenting has allowed me to engage with diverse communities and address the evolving needs of families. Starting a business was not easy, but I’m the type of person eager to grow and reach the next level, continuously striving to become the best version of myself, which in turn propels STP forward.
During the pandemic, I quickly transitioned to virtual classes. The support from the group was inspiring to witness. Some parents who were experiencing alcohol addictions, and a father from the group shared his recovery journey, encouraging others to seek the support needed to prevent relapses. In another class, a mother shared her struggles with depression, and the group came together to acknowledge her strength for sharing. We were able to provide her with referrals to other resources. This exemplifies what STP stands for – unity and support. Coming together as you are and knowing that you will always receive support.
My classes are designed to empower you, leaving you feeling confident and equipped to navigate the challenges of parenthood. I’m here to work alongside you during your incredible parenting journey.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love coffee! So my first destination would be La La Land Kind Cafe to share one of my favorite coffee shops. After enjoying a delicious cup of coffee and a snack, I’d make my way to The Grove to explore some of their shops. For lunch, we would go to my favorite pizza place, Tony’s Pizza in San Marino, before exploring my favorite museum, the Norton Simon Museum. To put the cherry on top of a wonderful day, we’d get dressed up and indulge in a delicious Italian meal at Emilia.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’m thrilled to introduce the amazing group of people who have been pillars of support throughout my journey as a business owner.
Melissa Miller, The Director of Child and Family Protective Services from The Help Group, played a pivotal role as my first contract to offer my parenting classes and professional development training. Melissa has been a significant contributor to my success. Her kindness, unwavering support, and guidance have been instrumental in my personal and professional growth.
Another mentor in my journey is Michael Curtis who is a Certified International Infant Massage Trainer from Infant Massage USA. He provided valuable assistance, from my first infant massage class to my first speaking engagement at the Infant Massage USA conference. Michael’s support instilled in me that confidence needed to navigate the challenges and triumphs of business ownership.
Dr. Brené Brown, a source of inspiration, taught me to not pay attention to the people in the cheap seats when you’re in the arena and to always lead with self-compassion and courage, a lesson I hold dear in my professional and personal life.
I would also like to dedicate my Shoutout series to my beautiful, supportive, and loving mom, Roseann Guillen. Throughout my journey, she has been a constant source of encouragement, always asking if I needed assistance, offering valuable feedback, and providing words of motivation. My mom knew what to say to help me feel at ease. When I contemplated giving up, she reminded me why I started STP and would tell me to always keep going. I deeply appreciate that she was there in my corner cheering me on. Mom, I love you, and I am grateful for your support and for being an amazing mom!
