We had the good fortune of connecting with Cherokee Bux and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cherokee Bux, what inspires you?
As a knife designer, I am inspired by the freedom of being creative, all the while combining the original vintage styles of yesteryear, to come up with a work of art, I can call my own.
As a business man, my inspiritation is based on the success of my reputation. Which in my case means too deliver a High Quality of Product , and Customer Service, that will hopefully continue to keep our customers happily satisfied, and returning for years to come.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Before I started designing Knives, I had been a knife collector for many, many years. I can trace the History of the Blade back in my family tree, for mulitiple centuries. I am a “Melungeon”. (America’s Original and 1st mixed race) Meaning a person of tri-race descent. I am Black, White, and Cherokee. Hence the name Cherokee Bux.
The Bux part of my name comes from my stage name “Buxaburn”. Music also runs deep in my Blood. I have been a recording artist since 1992, specializing in Rap and Reggae. And I currently am the lead vocalist for a Great Band called “Coyotes Del Barrio”!
Back to the knife, one of my oldest known ancestors was an Irish Warrior named “Gillian Of The Battle Axe”. My Grandfather a man named “Doddy” was a Butcher. Who dealt with many Butcher knives. Also on a much sadder note my GreatGrandmother was murdered by a knife wielding man. My Grandmother Ms. Mary carried and used knives for self defense in the rough Cincinnati Projects until her dieing day.
I’ll stop there but I could go on much further about the history of knives in my family!
Cherokee Bux Knife Co. is a new business, we are not even 6 months old as of yet. But in about 5 months time we are on schedule to deliver 20 custom made Knives and T shirts to customers here in Orange County, and all around the Country. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I definitely want to recognize and give a Big Shot out to Larry Chronic, the lead Knife maker here at Cherokee Bux Knife Co. His handcrafted, hand forged, custom made Knives are like none other on the market. He was a carpenter and wooden spoon maker for many years before he started making knives and you can see the experience that he brings to our product here at Cherokee Bux Knife Co.
