We had the good fortune of connecting with Stephen Aleczander and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Stephen, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
It is paramount that you have a great team in place! Each aspect of the team must be perfect in order to create a great image! Think of a picture as a table that has 4 legs. One leg may be the choice in model, the other leg may be the makeup artist/hairstylist, the third leg would be lighting, and the fourth leg post production. All 4 of these legs must come together to create an amazing image! If even one of these is subpar or missing then the table will fail and the image will suffer! It is imperative to have all of these in place to create the perfect image.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Getting to where i am today was not very easy. It took alot of trial and error and painful lessons. There were definitely times when i thought about giving up and quitting all together. But i would always receive a sign that kept me going! When there was a shoot that didnt go my way or a picture that didnt turn out like i wanted, there was always something that told me to keep going, From spending hours upon hours practicing editing, to driving 2 hours for a free shoot, it took alot of dedication to reach this point and i am grateful for the process. If you can take anything from me, please take the fact that things take time and nothing will come easy. Whatever you are doing, the process wont be easy, but if you press forward, good things will come!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
One of the first places i would take my best friend is the food truck festival event that takes place every Friday in the valley! Secondly, would be a trip to the Santee alley, which must be seen to be believed! Thirdly, i would take them on a tour of my favorite instagramable photo spots. From the murals on Melrose ave, to the light installation at LACMA, to the palm trees on the streets of Beverly Hills, I would definitely have to make sure they get their photos for the gram! Venice beach is a must, along with the Pike at Long Beach. Culver city is also on the list because there are so many food/night life options on Culver blvd.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Id like to recognize Kenya Alexander. She’s a friend who is a celebrity hairstylist who actually inspired me to get started with photography. Seeing her grind and hustle the way she has and to watch her growth has been inspiring to say the least, It would be a dream to work with her one day! Id also like to shout out Lasheeda Perry a.k.a. the Queen of Flavor! Watching her work in her craft and the passion she displays doing it has been amazing. Seeing how ambitious she is and watching door after door open for her makes me really happy!
