We had the good fortune of connecting with Stephen Grey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Stephen, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Without risk theres no reward. In terms of The Positive Identity, we know historically talking about race in general has been taboo, but defying that normative behavior and bringing the conversation to the forefront is what we’re about. We identify the risk, but we see that everyone will benefit from this risk.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I come from a background in journalism, production in Hollywood, and activism. Art and activism are interwoven in that you’re creating a message for the public to consume. Positive Identity shares the many good things people from all different communities are doing to ultimately change the public’s perception. Right now when it comes to race our country is at historic levels of division which makes our job extremely hard but also extremely important. Right now the major goal is to get the word out about us and we’re making a big gamble that people want positive unity in society. But we believe in people and we believe they do want just that. Besides the alternative is not an option that any of us truly want.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Los Angeles is full of so many amazing tourist attractions and also holds many special pockets it every part of the wide spread city. I’d take them on a hike in the Malibu Hills and then enjoy the beautiful views from El Matador Beach. I’d also make sure to stop by the Crenshaw Dairy Mart for an enriching Art Exhibition, and then head over to DTLA to have a drink and dinner at Perch. FYI, Sean who heads our Media outreach recommended the above options and he has better city taste than me so I’m keeping this! I’ll only add the legendary Sonny McLeans to that list because when you want to watch Boston sports, there is no second option. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The American Media. It’s not a particular organization but the culture of our journalism and film landscape. My undergrad degree was in Journalism and Film and I was taught very early on that representation matters in both of them. How we see people, how we perceive them dictates how society will take action with them. Our American Media deeply cares about perception when it comes to racial identities and all identities in general because they know how deeply it can impact society. The members of the greater Journalism and Hollywood landscapes have had a deep impact on the work that I have done and continue to do.
