We had the good fortune of connecting with Steve Higgs and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Steve, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
Born and Raised in Compton, Ca. I grew up on Central and Rosecrans. Watching both of my parents work multiple jobs showed be the meaning of hard work.. I Moved out of Compton to the Los Angeles area when I was a teenager to attend Washington Prep High School where I played Varsity baseball all four years. Was then drafted by the Detriot Tigers to their minor league system. Played the for about a year before giving up baseball due to the death of my grandmother, I lost love for the game. After no longer playing baseball I went to Cal State Northridge to continue my education, majoring in Sociology to become a Police Homicide Detective. In 2006 a friend of mine started an Artist Management company (Emagen Entertainment Group) and gave me the opportunity to be involved. Knowing nothing about the music industry I told him “I’m down, Let’s do it”. lol. From 2006 – 2009 my paycheck was around $500 every 2 weeks, The company was growing and I was still learning the business. During that time I had to earn income so I got a job at Level 14 Group Home for Adolescents. In 2010 I figured out another way to generate income until the management company became my primary source. I started booking shows international for C list Artist. I had a few contacts and resources and used them to the best of my ability. Did that for a few years and I loved it. During this time the management company was making incredible moves and I was really proud of my team. I finally was giving the chance to oversee an Artist and never turned back. As the years went on more opportunities came my way, hard work doesn’t go unnoticed.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I work for An Artist Management Company started 2006 with a group of friends that became family. I was given the opportunity but definitely had to earn my keep. I didn’t everything that was asked from the team and made major sacrifices. You need tough skin working with this group, It’s all love but also a business. I’ve had many challenges but was never afraid to ask any questions when I was unsure and Learned many lessons along the way. The most valuable advice I received was be proactive, take lead, Be confident when you speak and believe in yourself. Team work makes the team works. Earlier this year (June 2021) I was presented with opportunity to become CCO / Head of A&R at Preach Records / Ingrooves Music Group. Another great team to be apart of.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
