We had the good fortune of connecting with Stina & Sam Nesbit & Adams and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Stina & Sam, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Success to us means staying true to our main purpose, to make genuine connections with others through good music. In this day and age it is really easy to get seduced by numbers, marketing, popularity and we want to put being real at our forefront. We would rather make a real connection with a few people than have a fleeting moment with the masses.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Sam and I became friends on our first day of college at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota 14 years ago. Our shared love of music led us to develop a folk band with a few of our friends and that musical experienced blossomed our friendship into a romantic relationship and we have been making music together ever since. Through navigating many life changes including multiple cross-country moves, relationship changes, and graduate school, our deep friendship and love for music has always been consistent. Even during periods where we weren’t writing a lot of music together, music has always been a big part of our life and our relationship. We bring different things to our musical relationship. I love to perform and story-tell and my work as a therapist has helped me lean into different life experiences and write from different perspectives. On the other hand, Sam has a creative talent that I have never seen in another person. His passion and deep interest in all different types of music is evident in the music he creates. It flows from him effortlessly. I would love to scan his brain 🙂 Everyone who works with him notices this infectious quality and he navigates it with humility and gratitude.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We have done this. Our LA sampler!

– Monday nights at Gold Diggers (Very Good Mondays) by Alex Wasily. Sweet guy and he has created a weekly night of improvised music that is always incredible.
– Tuesday double header. Catch live jazz at General Lee’s in Chinatown and then head across the street for live music at Melody Lounge.
– Take a free salsa lesson and then enjoy incredible live Latin music at El Floridita
– Spend an afternoon downtown and hit the Broad, The Last Bookstore, and lunch at Grand Central Market
– Walk the gardens at The Huntington Library
– Head to Laguna beach to go snorkeling at Shaw’s Cove and swim the the Garibaldi fish
– Eat at Dan Sung Sa (Koreatown) for amazing skewers, Thai Market Song (Silverlake) for fun Thai fusion, Budonoki (East Hollywood) for Japanese fusion, Swingers (Hollywood) for late night breakfast

I could go on and on..

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We are only able to create and perform music because of the people who have inspired us and given us chances. Sam and I are both blessed with incredibly supportive families. They have supported both our romantic and musical relationship since the beginning from throwing house concerts for their friends and family to contributing towards recording costs, they are our number one fans forever. We are also deeply grateful for our musical community in Knoxville, Tennessee. There are some incredible artists in that community, particularly Jeanine Fuller, Donald Brown, and Vance Thompson who have brought us up onto the stage and provided opportunities for us to grow and share our music.
