We had the good fortune of connecting with Style by Walt Walt Cholmondeley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Style by Walt, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I have always had an interest in fashion, styling and costuming for as long as I can remember. Everything from television, to film, to red carpets, runways, magazines, music videos and street wear. I became fascinated with how clothing like art speaks for itself. Also growing up I dealt with a lot of social anxiety and clothing allowed me to express myself without using words. That is what I love about fashion; the designs, the silhouettes, the fabrics, the garments all speak for themselves. Once I realized I could find work in an industry where I could utilize this ability to create an image, portray a feeling and style for characters, artists and individuals I knew I found the career for me.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets me apart from others is my sense of style as well as my resilience and determination. I’m not afraid of hearing no. I’m not afraid of failing. I’m not afraid to self-advocate and go for the things I want and deserve and essentially bet on myself. It definitely has not been an easy road but nothing ventured, nothing gained and this same resilience and determination has put me in a place to work on impactful projects I have only dreamed of. Any no or obstacle I’ve faced has always taught me valuable lessons and led me on a bigger and better path.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my bestie is coming to town we are definitely going to brunches, beaches, parks, drag shows, clubs and doing some traveling like Catalina Island or Palm Springs or maybe even squeeze in a quick trip to Vegas or Mexico or both.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
It’s all about the beautiful and talented Katie Mamie, I met her on my very first costume job and she’s taken me under her wing and given me opportunities I never imagined I would have, I’m forever thankful. I also need to send a big shoutout to Shari Bisnaught who has also been a wonderful mentor and support to me in this industry. Lastly I need to thank my mother, my father and my sister Denise for their unwavering love and support.
