We had the good fortune of connecting with Sue Fisher King and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sue Fisher, what role has risk played in your life or career?
It’s terribly trite, but “nothing ventured, nothing gained”. To create anything personal that is true to your own creative impulses, you have to put ideas together and make selections that reflect your passions for color, shape, etc. and hope others are intrigued by them too. It’s so rewarding when you respond positively to your own creations. People generally like fresh looks and are attracted to them.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
One of my greatest pluses in business has been my enthusiasm for retail and for the hunt for new and wonderful things. This is never tiresome and fills me with delight. If I didnt have that it would be very difficult to walk miles and miles in endless trade fairs looking for the next special item. I’ve learned to trust my instincts but also to listen to my trusted employees and collaborate when possible. We never want to get stale and are always looking for the next creative people to provide us with new and wonderful products.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The first day we would drive to Carmel, stay at the Doggie Hotel with doggies, and walk on the beach, visit 17 mile Drive, and go out to Carmel Valley to shop and eat. The next day we would return to SF and spend a quiet day walking around my home town, Sausalito, and have a nice lunch and dinner in Marin. The third day we would drive to the Easy Bay and visit the Etro discount store for shopping and come back via Fourth St in Berkeley for food and shopping. The fourth day we could head up to Sebastopol to visit a friend at her ranch, swim in the pool, walk around the property, and cook something good for dinner and get back in time for a good night’s sleep. After that they would be on their own.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Two dear old friends of mine deserve my shoutout although neither of them are here to receive my thanks. Sandra Griswold and Wade Bentson encouraged and inspired me every step of the way as confident tastemakers and experienced merchants.
