Meet Summer Machelle | Tattoo Artist and Owner of Summer Machelle Studios

We had the good fortune of connecting with Summer Machelle and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Summer, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I knew I wanted to open my own private studio early on into my career. I wanted a space that was different from your standard tattoo shop. Something elevated and welcoming for my clients, especially now as the Industry is shifting. Tattooing has become more welcomed in the mainstream, I wanted an environment to reflect that. I also knew I wouldn’t be able to achieve that goal working for someone else.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I was always an artist. Even as a kid, I remember drawing for hours and being entirely content with just that. I found calmness in art during a time when my life was anything but. And it saved me. I never thought in a million years I would be so lucky to get to create for a living. Even when I started tattooing at 18, I feared this would just be something to get me by until the next thing. Was it easy? No. But every day I am grateful I never gave up, and I am so grateful I love my job. I think I’ll be tattooing until I drop.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Any friend of mine is food obsessed! Definitely taking them to The Source mall in Buena Park to get some spicy soup from Korean Tang and Noodle House. And some Mochinuts on the way out! Also love being outdoors, my favorite camp spot in the area is definitely Blueridge Campground in Wrightwood, it sits right off the PCT so it has some great hiking.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The credit really lies in the inspiration I’ve gotten from fellow artists. I wouldn’t have been so determined had I not seen the success in the talents around me. That includes my good friend Tacho (@tachotheripper on instagram) and Devon Rae (@eyesaliva on instagram). They are truly talented, have believed in themselves, and pushed their limits time and again. That rubs off.
