We had the good fortune of connecting with Joey Tapz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joey, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
The beauty of life is that it’s truly up to you. As artists, we all deal with mental health issues fighting ourselves within our own heads, doubt is our biggest enemy. One thing about it is.. you can sit and think about the “what if’s” or just take the leap and change your whole life. The steering wheel is in your hands, literally. I took the leap and I am nothing but grateful for the journey I have been able to experience. I can’t say it was easy but I can definitely say it was worth it and for that reason, I will always encourage anyone and everyone to take that leap, don’t be afraid.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My career can be a handful at times but I absolutely love and admire what I do. I spend most of my time making music, performing at events, selling tickets and merchandise, shooting music videos and working on perfecting my craft. My career consists of splitting myself to complete different projects and visions. During the day, I still work a day job from 6am to 2:30pm and during the night time and weekends, comes out my alter ego: Joey Tapz. The most enjoyable part of being in this industry is getting around to network and meet new people that have a similar mentality and can learn from one another as well as grow together. I can’t lie and say everything is perfect all the time but I always admire the positive side of the bad.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
One thing about me is that I love to EAT. We would definitely be heading down to Ohjah where they provide a Japanese hibachi steakhouse type of dinner. We would spend the weekend out at different locations experiencing the best out of our city. Vegas is very small but still has some places worth visiting such as Area 15, the Strip, night/day clubs and etc. If my best friend is coming over, he would definitely be staying at our home and enjoying time with our family. I am very family oriented so all my closest friends are family at this point and we all love to get together and just be kids again.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My fiancé and my mom definitely deserve the most recognition. I went through very tough times as a teenager and when I needed them the most, they were there for me with no hesitation. If it weren’t for my fiancé motivating me to continue pursuing music and helping me out with everything when I was ready to just give everything up, I would not be at the place that I am now. My mom was always there to support my ideas and personality when others would judge me and try to break me down. They have definitely kept my head above water through it all and for that I want to shout out both of these very special women in my life. I love you guys very much. I would also like to give a special shoutout to my engineer Bambito Watson, Londun Bee and JMORadioShow as well as many others that gave me opportunities when no one else would. I appreciate all of my fans, family and supporters, you all truly mean the world to me. Thank you. (mic drop)
