We had the good fortune of connecting with Sunset Shades and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sunset, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Sunset Shades is my alias where I produce and perform indie – electronic music and it solely thrives on the factor of relatability. All the music I make in my studio is pretty much my expression of what plays in my head when I experience a pretty sunset. I feel like the most common feeling one gets while watching a sunset is the feeling of nostalgia. My music tries to make you feel a certain kind of nostalgia, the one where it doesn’t make you look back at your memories but makes you look forward to better beginnings. For an artist, it is the greatest gift if you can impact someone’s day or mood positively and to me personally, success doesn’t mean a crazy amount of money or professional accomplishments or even having big numbers, but it is the idea of being known or remembered as a genuine person to every single person you meet. It is a voluntary effort you have to put in to radiate that positive energy and my brand and I would feel successful if that is consistently maintained over the years.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Everything I’m able to do at this point in my career is because of the constant effort, support, and risks my parents took towards me pursuing a career in music and business. Coming from a middle-class Indian household, pursuing a career in the music and entertainment industry was only something that we saw on TV or heard stories of. Despite the fact that both my parents are doctors and were completely unaware of what it takes to make it as an electronic artist in the US, they pushed me to do what I was passionate about and allowed me to navigate this industry based on the belief I have on my talent. I did meet a lot of professors in grad school who were mentors to me and helped me understand the environment of the music industry, as well as some incredible artists and collaborators who prepared me for what’s to come in the future as I get deeper in this independent music space. Special shoutout to my friend and manager Abbas Kagalwala. We both were a small part of the Indian electronic music scene and were good friends for over 5 years, until 2021 when we turned this friendship into a serious professional venture. He now manages me and negotiates opportunities for Sunset Shades and the reason why I feel this is a strong team is because he’s someone who understands my vision and is efficient in streamlining work, which makes the process of creating even more exciting. He really plays a big part in the success of this venture and deserves the credit and recognition.
