Meet Sunshine Cooper

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sunshine Cooper and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sunshine, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I was born and raised in Washington Heights, New York City, with a Bahamian heritage that has profoundly influenced my journey. Growing up in a creative household with three brothers who were all involved in artistic fields, I was naturally drawn to the arts. One of my brothers, an actor and film producer, exposed me to the behind-the-scenes world of fashion and film, including unforgettable experiences like movie sets and New York Fashion Week. These moments sparked my passion for makeup, and I soon began assisting at events, learning hands-on from seasoned artists.
My interest in skincare developed after a severe sun poisoning incident during one of New York’s hottest summer days. I struggled with reactions to various dermatologist perscribed products, which led me to explore natural remedies. This experience inspired me to invest in my education, ultimately becoming an esthetician and certified makeup artist.
Throughout my career, I’ve received numerous compliments for being one of the few women of color in the industry. This representation has allowed me to connect deeply with models and actors, particularly when it comes to matching their skin tones and understanding the unique needs of melanin-rich skin. My background, personal experiences, and commitment to diversity have all shaped my approach to beauty, allowing me to help others feel confident and radiant in their own skin.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business blends my work as an esthetician and makeup artist with my skincare line, Shiine Artistry, which features natural skincare products. What sets me apart is my ability to connect deeply with clients, particularly through addressing the unique needs of melanin-rich skin. This personalized approach is a key aspect of my role as a high-profile esthetician at The Golden Door Spa, where I offer top-tier skincare services to a discerning clientele.
I’m especially proud of Shiine Artistry, where I’ve created a line of natural skincare products designed to cater to various skin needs with gentle, effective ingredients. My motto, ‘Embrace Your Inner Shine,’ encapsulates my philosophy of celebrating natural beauty and encouraging clients to glow from within, whether with or without makeup. It’s about achieving a natural radiance through overall wellness and happiness.
My journey has been shaped by significant challenges, including losing everything and having to rebuild, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Moving to California two years ago meant starting over from scratch without the immediate support of friends or family. I’ve been focused on rebuilding my life and business, creating new personal and professional connections. This experience has taught me valuable lessons in resilience and adaptability.
I want the world to know that my brand is about more than just beauty; it’s about embracing and enhancing each individual’s unique qualities. My story reflects transformation and perseverance, driven by a desire to make a meaningful impact through both personalized beauty services at The Golden Door Spa and high-quality natural skincare products from Shiine Artistry. My goal is to continue growing my business, inspiring confidence, and helping others ‘Embrace Their Inner Shine’ while building a supportive community in California.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to my parents Renee and Anthony Cooper and my three brothers, Darrell, Daniel, & Colman. Growing up in a creative environment with my brothers was a significant influence on my career path. Their support, especially my brother’s introduction to the world of fashion and film, played a crucial role in shaping my passion for makeup and skincare. I also want to acknowledge the mentors who have significantly impacted my journey, Mrs. Ortencia, Michael Walker, Marvin Maximo Hamilton, Rob Akins, Karen Luna, Kyle Tran, Ms. Glory, Mariluz Fontana, and WM Michael Reid. Each of these people has offered invaluable mentorship, encouragement, and support, helping me grow both personally and professionally in my career as an esthetician and makeup artist.
