We had the good fortune of connecting with Suwichada Busamrong-Press and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Suwichada, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
I have been trying to achieve an ideal work life balance.  Initially, I was focused on studying and work at the expense of family/me time.  As I became more experienced and confident in my art, I have been able to produce more work efficiently.   I spend more time to thoroughly form a concept in my mind and plan better how to execute so the time required for my work is reduced and more free time.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My work evokes a passage through a long journey to find myself. Each piece is born from reverence for my ancestors and the simple beautiful life with nature they cultivated. Through a combination of abstract forms, I explore how traditional cultures and values connect to new ideas of modern living. I am influenced by my Northeast Thai roots and the vibrant colors of my dialect culture, emphasizing spontaneity while also connecting to the emotive quality of each form. I hope that these stories can be experienced in a way that reminds the viewer of the subtleties and nuances of their own history.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There are so many galleries to visit in LA, I’d like to share one of my favorites, Reisigandtaylor contemporary in Culver city.  I also recommend they visit Hermosa Beach.  You can sun bath, play volleyball or take a bike ride on the strand all the way up to Venice.  The Hermosa Pier offers great views along with the surfing hall of fame.  The pier has great shopping, and you can relax at my favorite restaurant, RYLA on Hermosa Avenue.    After a day at the beach, they should visit Thai town in Hollywood to enjoy authentic Thai cuisine and karaoke after dinner for entertainment.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
It all started with my fellow ESL students at Hunter College in New York.   We were all in the same boat, newly arrived immigrants who were studying our new language and culture together.  They helped me unlock the keys to transition to a new country.   We are still close to this day.

At my undergraduate school, CCS in Detroit, Sandra Olave was the head of the Interior Design Department and my greatest mentor.   She helped me develop an understanding of design, color and multi-discipline that became the foundation of my fine art practice today.  I also owe a great deal to my fellow artists and faculties at both Cranbrook Art Academy, Bill Massie, my mentor and especially, Otis College of Art and Design where I received my MFA.  I couldn’t have done it without the help and support of their faculty, especially, Ben Weissman, Kade Twist, Judie Bamber, Cletus Dalglisch-Schommer?, Kori Newkirk, Jennifer Moon, and Asher Hartman.

Last, I wouldn’t be here today without my family back home in Thailand.
