We had the good fortune of connecting with Suzanne Wade and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Suzanne, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
“When nothing is certain, anything is possible.”
That quote has been my touchstone since I began Rank & Sugar. The brand was created during a tumultuous period in my life. There were moments I didn’t think I could continue, but that quote was the thing that pulled me through. I’m a big dreamer, so it’s my battle cry.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Rank & Sugar is a slow-fashion, handcrafted sustainable label that aims to honor soldiers, empower women and spread peace. Every vintage piece we source is reworked and hand embroidered. We recently launched “Customize your closet” where customers can send in their garments they no longer love to have us reinterpret them into pieces they will cherish. It’s a way to minimize clothing going into landfills. We are incredibly passionate about sustainability in the fashion industry and raising awareness to the issue. Its been an interesting journey thus far building the brand. There were moments I questioned if this was viable, but the universe answered back with a resounding yes when J Crew reached out to do a collaboration for their NYFW presentation. It was the nod I needed and I never looked back. I think trusting your gut, your voice is paramount when creating your brand. There’s so much noise these days with social media and it’s easy to be swayed with whatever the latest trend is. But noise is just that. It’s refreshing to find artists that are true to themselves and doing their thing regardless of whatever the latest fad is. I strive to be that artist.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Nashville is bursting at the seams with things to do. The music scene, art scene, restaurants and bars multiply daily. You’re asking a true introvert for an itinerary which I find hilarious. I spend most nights working away in my studio. If someone forced me to go out… I’d start my day at Cafe Roze with the most delicious rose latte and make my way over to the Flea Market which takes place once a month at the Nashville Fairgrounds. From there I’d head around the corner to E+Rose in Wedgewood Houston for a quick bite. I’d then make my way to 12 South for lots of shopping options- Hero, Imogene & Willie, and UAL. By then, cocktails are in order! The rooftop bar scene downtown is spectacular so the Bobby Hotel it is. From there I’d check out City Winery or The Basement for some live music. After that I’m set until next month!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My 3 kids have been instrumental in propelling Rank & Sugar forward. They have all played a hand in my motivation to succeed. My oldest, Zoe, manages both the social media and the website, while my other two, Lola & Nate are my cheerleaders. Seeing their mom reinvent herself and find my voice is my why.
