Meet Suzy Bessett | Founder/Principal The Metabolic Connection®️, Certified Eating Psychology Coach and Award Winning Documentary Filmmaker

We had the good fortune of connecting with Suzy Bessett and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Suzy, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I founded The Metabolic Connection®️ because what is going on in our bodies (hormones/endocrine system) and externally, (our relationship with food, who we are as eaters) are inextricably linked. Without understanding both, we are unlikely to succeed with any diet, supplement, or workout program.
Evidence:
1)The obesity epidemic punishes American taxes payers with over $200B per year of health problems, lost wages, and absenteeism.
2)According to a study in the Journal of Health Economics, people with a BMI (body mass index) of 30 or greater spend almost $3000 more on healthcare costs yearly.
3) 99% of dieters gain all their weight back in one year, usually more.
What should our readers know about your business?
What is your relationship with food? Who are you as an eater? Do you eat when you’re bored, lonely, or depressed? Do you use food as a reward or even as a form of punishment?
Are you consumed throughout the day with food thoughts and the scale? Have you spent the majority of your life dieting?
Gain the weight, lose the weight, gain it back. Maybe more?
Shame and guilt. Rinse, Repeat…
I founded The Metabolic Connection because I understand.
For more than 30 years the scale owned me. I didn’t know I had PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) until my 30’s. The confusion and lack of information formed my relationship with the scale. I would weigh myself multiple times a day, even in the middle of the night. If it was down, I thought I could rule the world. If up, my day was ruined. Ruminating, loathing thoughts turned sour. That is history.
In just the last 100 years, everything about our relationship with food has changed. The “clean your plate” mentality, low-fat craze, the diet industry and social media (just to name a few) have not only changed what we eat but how we eat. Distracted, rushed, and compulsive with large portions.
Our customized 12-week program, coupled with updated bloodwork from your healthcare provider, is the difference.
It is…
The Metabolic Connection®️
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Living on the East Coast, NYC is always a must. A quick train ride into Grand Central and we are off and running. A Broadway show is the quintessential stop. Going with the flow, we save money and buy our tickets at the box office just before showtime. (Trust me, there are almost always great tickets and no handling fees!)
Wicked The Musical and The Thanksgiving Play are among many brilliant choices.
The visit wouldn’t be complete without a trip to SoHo. Boutique shops, people watching, and al fresco dining.
Finally, regardless if it’s Madison Square Garden or a local bar, live music unites all and for me, is the definition of a great night.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Dark Horse, by Todd Rose and Ogi Ogas, stems from The Harvard Graduate School of Education Project. They studied men and women who achieved great success though nobody saw them coming.
Inspirational and a must-read, Dark Horse investigates the cookie-cutter “Standardized Covenant”. Take the same classes/tests as others, but get better scores. Chase the same diploma but get into a better school. Chase the same career but get a better job. Versus, uncovering your micro motives, understanding who you are, and what drives your inner flame. Blaze your own remarkable trail in a one-of-a-kind journey.
I call this “Wearing The Pantsuit”. It’s a metaphor and I even use it with my children.
In the ’90s, I spent a decade in the investment business. I worked for a Wall Street firm that had few women in my particular role. Knowledge was imperative but knowing who I was and what I wanted made all the difference. The metaphor came from one night out with a big group of girlfriends.
It was a black tie event and we had all agreed while rollerblading on Lake Shore Drive (Chicago) to wear the staple night-out dress, the “LBD”, Little Black Dress. That evening I decided to break the mold and wear a very boxy/very 90’s black pantsuit. I’m quite sure my friends gave me side-eye at preparty cocktails, but I didn’t care. I felt like a million bucks. I loved being different. I LOVED not looking like everyone else. I will never forget that evening because it encapsulated a defining characteristic of me, always. Taking the path less chosen. Going my own way. Making things happen on my terms in my own quirky way.
To this day, I color outside the lines. I dare to be different. It is sometimes a lonely and scary place but it has always reaped rewards. Success takes an enormous amount of risk and courage. Success looks different for each but finding our micro motives, who we are, and what makes us tick, is the secret sauce of success, monetarily but more importantly, internally.
Go ahead… Wear The Pantsuit and read Dark Horse!
