We had the good fortune of connecting with Takako Saito and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Takako, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My main goal has been to do something sustainable and ethical, and share what I do with as many people as possible. I’d like everyone to be informed about the benefits of sustainable materials for the environment and the farmers.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started my career in 2004 making patterns for luxury brand designers in Tokyo. While gaining valuable experience, I became overwhelmed by how unsustainable the fashion industry can be. Then I found a fair trade clothing brand, which made me realize that I needed to focus on sustainable materials and ethical practices. To achieve my goals of sustainability, I make patterns for local designers to support small businesses, I run my organic cotton intimate line, Sai, and I create one of a kind garments using sustainable materials with collaboration from featured guests on my YouTube channel.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m from Japan, and if my best friend in Japan was visiting me, I’d defenitely show her some of the beaches near LA. My favorite ones are Laguna Beach, Manhattan Beach and Point Dume. There are some cute boutiques near the beaches, so we could go shopping afterwards. Since the weather is always nice in LA, I’d take her for a hike in Griffith Park or Runyon Canyon Park. As for the food, I think LA is one of unique cities where you can find the variety of international cuisine. My favorites are a Brazilian restaurant in Downtown, Wood Spoon, and an Ethiopian restaurant, Meals by Genet. The music scene in LA is amazing too. There is always some music events, except during the pandemic. I enjoy listening to music outdoor, so I’d find outdoor music venues for us to visit.
