We had the good fortune of connecting with Takis Simon (Studio 1939) and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Takis, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I pursued a creative career because I couldn’t imagine doing anything else. Being able to express my thoughts and ideas visually has always been fulfilling, whether it was drawing my own cartoon characters as a kid to now designing a logo.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

I take pride in the level of detail and attention I put into my work. I want to go above and beyond what the client expects and to anticipate their needs. I want them to feel confident that they are being heard and for my work to be a reflection of that.

In making the decision to become a freelancer years ago, the biggest challenge I faced was dealing with uncertainty. But, one of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned is the importance of building meaningful relationships. The connections I’ve made over the years have been crucial during those times of the unknown, not only in obtaining work, but for support and inspiration.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

The High Line on the west side of Manhattan would be a good place to start. It’s great for people watching and sometimes there are cool art installations throughout. Afterwards, you can bounce around the various art galleries in Chelsea.

Stopping by Taqueria St. Marks Place is a must if you love tacos as much as I do. Besides being delicious, it’s reasonably priced and they have great margaritas.

Then, maybe take a walk over the Brooklyn Bridge if it isn’t too crazy and packed with people. If it is, you can take a ferry instead over to Brooklyn Bridge Park and end up at the Brooklyn Heights Promenade to catch the sunset.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my grandmother, who was very supportive and helped foster my creativity. Growing up, she would make sure I always had a new sketchbook to draw in right before I finished my old one. She enrolled me into Saturday art classes and took time from work to drop me off every weekend. And after I graduated college and had to start thinking about what I was going to do, she always impressed upon me the importance of doing what made me happy.
