We had the good fortune of connecting with Kimberly Cowan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kimberly, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
I truly believe in “trusting your gut”. Awesome that you have people you can go to for advice, but rather why not consider sitting with your feelings and trusting your own decision? There are many times when giving up would be the “easier” thing to do but why not try and push yourself a little bit further? Go for one more week? Hang in there a little while longer? Soon enough, that feeling may subside and you think “yea this is my passion”. This shows that it is not time to give up just yet.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My love for art began at a very young age. I started out as a painter, painting and creating art on clothing. From studying Fashion Design at SCAD in Atlanta, GA, I decided that accessories is where my passion lies. I built up my resilience and eagerness to do my very best in whatever I present to the world, after being used to critiques and panels at SCAD during our weekly projects. At that point, I accepted that critiques were opinions for possible changes for the better. After being “behind the scenes” creating from start to finish in college, I wanted to do the same on the jobs I got after college. I believe there are many creatives, but very few have studied and know the process from research to execution and the final piece. Working with artisans, both locally and internationally has its advantages in that I have applied all that i have learned to my Brand. Creating in your timing and being sure not to rush the process. There will be lots of critiques and people with opinions, but remember that only yours matters. The journey will not be easy but in times of being overwhelmed, take a breath and step away.
My Brand is tangible proof that once you stop letting fear get the best of you, you are capable of doing amazing things. Mae+Lang Jewels a luxe, sustainable, unisex brand. Manifested and aligned, with the guidance of my ancestors, M+L was created. To feel powerful, desired, shameless, seductive and fearless is what we feel the person wearing our brand, experience. While jewelry has the ability to change an outfit, start a conversation, and boost confidence, each piece is designed with the intention of being a daily reminder of your power.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well lets begin with Sunday! Sunday we start at 9am at the Farmer’s Market on Fairfax. From there, we will head to the Smorgasbord in DTLA until around 1pm. The evening we can catch a Sound Bath session at the Calming Spot and dinner at Soul Delicious on Fairfax. This would help us start off the week with a calm mind. Mondays are preparation for the week, planning, emails and scheduling. One of my favorite spots during the weeks are hitting up coffee shops/ small restaurants to get some light work done. Cafe on 27 is a restaurant in the Topanga Canyon mountains with the most beautiful view while working. And it doesn’t hurt that their food is amazing. I also love to work at Hilltop at the Inglewood location. They have plenty of seating and again the food and staff are amazing. Wednesday, we can chill at the Starbucks in the Palisades near the beach. Beautiful view. After that, we would make a stop at the Glass Church more beautiful views and some photo opps. Mid-week, on Wednesdays, we can go to Malibu. Starting off with a hike in the Malibu Creek, then chill for some reading at the Malibu State Park. Afterwards head down to get lunch at the Malibu Pier. Drink and Dinner later that evening at the Malibu Cafe. Thursday we can hang out in DTLA, with lunch at Joey DTLA and do a little light shopping. From there we can stop by the Broad Museum to catch some art and fun food trucks in the area.. Friday, a little lunch at Sage in Pasadena. That evening we can go to the Vegan Playground in Inglewood. They have so many delicious foods options that anyone would love, vegan or not. Saturday, we can lounge in with movies and lunch. Then have dinner that evening at Beauty and Essex. If any other festivities, day parties, random lounge places, cool hangout spots pop up, we can venture there too.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I believe my support system deserves a “SHOUT-OUT”! Being an entrepreneur, keeping yourself encouraged to keep going can be tough sometimes. At times, I am amazed that they “feel” my discouragement just by my body language.
Independence can be your downfall sometimes, not asking for help or a hug or encouragement. So it feels good to know that I have a “team” that wants to see me win!
