We had the good fortune of connecting with Talia Dalton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Talia, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
As I’ve gotten more serious with my career in music, my balance has rocked back and forth between procrastination, over working and moments of balance and functional work flow. It’s a true and real challenge to have a healthy work relationship, especially when you work for yourself. I’ve been homeschooled most my life and find that’s greatly assisted me in being accountable for myself and deadlines, but even then, it’s a completely different relationship. With work always at my fingertips – two feet from my bed – the line between work day and day off blend together.

I love what I do, I’m a guitar and pre-K teacher, session singer, songwriter and avid creator, but all of those pursuits take prep time, coordinating, constant communication and ENERGY. I find it challenging to set a boundary for myself, and that’s what it’s all about. Creating and upholding boundaries. Once I begin to slack on them, it’s a quick spiral. I begin working into the early hours of the morning and suffering anxiety and the occasional panic attack. But as I’ve started prioritizing my mental health, social life, and happiness, I’ve begin to find my footing and balance. That doesn’t mean I don’t feel frustrated knowing there’s work sitting on my desk that I could be getting done as I’m hanging out with friends, that just means that sometimes I have to push myself to put it all away and leave it for another day.

If you live for checking the box and completing the task, there’s never an end. There’s always something to me done, something to be worked, or someone to respond to. I have yet to figure out the perfect formula for it all, but I just have to take it one day at a time and remember I’m not perfect, having late deadlines and later email responses is the most human thing I do. I can not do it all, all the time and that’s okay.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Music has always been my biggest passion. I’ve loved many other pursuits along the way, and found success in them but never had the drive for them that I have for music. Songwriting and singing have been the only things I’ve done consistently my whole life (except breathing), they’ve been my way of expressing myself to the world and my family. I’ve been singing longer than I’ve spoken, and writing songs since I was 9 years old. I never allowed for a backup plan in my head, I just always knew I’d make my career in music happen no matter what.

I put all of myself into music and always have. But as much as I’ve honed my skill and worked endless hours on singing, songwriting and playing guitar, there is a large piece that can’t be chalked up to practice. I very much believe I’ve been given a gift, which makes it my responsibly to share with the world. I see the effect my music has on people – striking stillness into children, coaxing out tears from strangers and brining me a peace I can’t find anywhere else – so I know just how important it is to never give up on it.

Things are just starting to take off and I can only be excited for where my music will take me. I’ve already experienced some unimaginable things like being the youngest winner of a national songwriting competition at 13, winning another national award at 18 for my songwriting and voice, and gaining the attention of some of my biggest musical influences after covering their songs on social media. Who knows what will happen next, all I know is I’m ready to go where the wind blows!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For food, there’s some pretty great restaurants with Vegan options in the Triangle area of North Carolina. I’d recommend Sage Vegetarian Cafe, Brandwein’s Bagels, Earth To Us, Guasaca, Gringo a Go Go and Mellow Mushroom.

For local attractions, get a tour at Piedmont Farm Animal Refuge, walk the Raleigh Art Museum, Kayak on Jordan lake, fly a kite or take pictures with the sunflowers at Dorothea Dix park, swim in the Eno rock Quarry, and thrift shop at Dorcas Ministries

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My sister Sojourner Dalton is one of the biggest supporters in my life. She’s the world greatest big sisters I don’t know what I’d do without her. She’s talked me through some serious lows and been there to celebrate the highs too. I love her with 1M percent of my heart. My best friend Jessica Ponder who is family in every way. She is my hype man and confidence builder, she never lets me put up with crap in my life. My parents Jill and Jeffrey Dalton for encouraging me to pursue music and pushing me when I needed pushing. They always believed I would make it happen, and gave me my boss attitude to always find a way and never give up. My music teacher in middle school Matthew Bodman, who introduced me to a competition I would go on to win, but above that gave me every ounce of help and support I could ask for. He gave me faith that there are great teachers out there who truly care. My many friends throughout the years who never held back words of encouragement and love, and cheered me on at all musical events. So many more
