We had the good fortune of connecting with Talia Dekel and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Talia, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Balancing work and my personal life has always been a challenge. I work full-time as an in-house photographer in addition to doing freelance work on the weekends. I am able to balance it all by being very selective about which weekends I choose to shoot. Additionally, I have recently decided to outsource my retouching for freelance projects so that I do not become too overwhelmed. Having a good balance is extremely important to my creative process. I define success by how happy I am and if all I am doing is overworking myself, I am not able to take the time to be inspired by the little things in life.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Thank you so much for the compliment! I am fortunate to be a full-time in-house product photographer. I work at a company called CBDfx and I am so proud to be a part of their creative team. I shoot every image asset for the company. Whether it’s for email marketing, social posts, brochures, print ads, or tradeshow booths, my work, as their photographer, is always involved. I am even more fortunate to have a list of loyal freelance clients that I shoot for on the weekends. They include beauty, health, and wellness brands from all over the world. I wouldn’t be where I am if it weren’t for the amazing education I received at Art Center College of Design. I graduated in 2017 and since then, I have been able to grow my business via social media. Most of my clients have found me through Instagram and Facebook groups for creatives, from there it has grown to referrals. It came very much as a surprise to me when I started getting business through Facebook groups. A simple comment on a post with your website could lead to so many opportunities that you weren’t even aware existed. It has been such an exciting journey so far and I am incredibly blessed to have worked with many different clients and industries. To think that this is just the beginning of my career is extremely invigorating.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My absolute favorite spot in LA is Millcross Coffee in Culver City. Everything on their menu is a winner but I have a particular weakness for their green sauce and iced matcha! Another great spot is Tomi Sushi, also in Culver City. Their yellowtail cilantro roll is a must! If you’re interested in doing something a little more active, I highly recommend Solstice Canyon in Malibu. With a waterfall, ruins, and ocean views, it is a must-see.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I owe everything to my parents, Julie and Elie. They have always believed in me and supported all of my creative endeavors without any doubt. They never made me feel that what I wanted wasn’t possible. They made sure that I knew I was capable and deserving of achieving my dreams. Thank you, Mom and Dad, for your love, support, encouragement, and advice. It is an honor to be your daughter.
