We had the good fortune of connecting with Tam Nguyen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tam, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
To me, balance is everything. I think if you have balance and everything that you do in life you will be OK. That includes your love life, your career, and the love that you give yourself. I think a lot of people do not find a balance and everything they do, and that is the reason why they do not become successful. You need to find what makes it work for YOU.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Do you know the song “Party in the USA” by Miley Cyrus? I always felt like that’s how my life would be once I entered LA. I’m from Orlando Florida, where everything is a lot smaller and slower. Even though I have been in Los Angeles for four years now, I still feel like I am a new face in LA. Every single day when I wake up I still can’t believe that I’m here. I recently moved into downtown Los Angeles, into my dream apartment. After being here for four years, I think I’m finally financially stable. I wouldn’t say that I am successful, but I am definitely very balanced and happy. I do believe balance is everything. I think everyone comes to California for the main thing, and I think that is acting. I don’t think I ever go around telling people I am an actress, just because I know the first question they’re going to ask me is “what have you been in? “So I just let them see what I do on my Instagram. I take pride into the work that I post on my Instagram. On my stories, you will see all the commercials that I have been in, or the movies I helped produce, or even the movies that I am in. But aside from acting, I am also a contact creator. I love working with brands. I think that I’ve learned so much more about brands in the last year, then I’ve ever in my entire life. Learning about brands is fascinating to me. Because I learned about what they stand for, and who they are as a brand. For you to be able to work with certain brands, and finding out why they want to work with you? Is a very very honoring thing. You have to understand, Brands have hundreds of people reaching out to them on a daily basis. So when they choose you, they are saying you’re unique. I think what makes me different from other people, is that I am very very relatable. I don’t come from a lot of money, I come from a big family, and I have nothing but love and joy to share with others. There’s no sugarcoating when it comes to me because I don’t believe we have time for that. I always show keys how affordable my clothes are. As I always shop on the sales rack. I always share my relationship with others and how imperfect we are. And that is OK. And I always show my real flaws to my audience. Even though I always use a filter. It is OK to be a little bit of everything as long as we have balance. With all of this being said, I think being an Asian American is also very hard to do any of this. As we are very small minority especially in the city of Los Angeles. Being able to represent Asians and also, Florida… it brings me so much joy.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I know that is very typical, to bring everyone to the Hollywood sign, or all the hikes. But I think if my friends were to come, I will show them a day in my life. What it takes to really really hustle. How to wake up early if you want to make it. I also would like to show them my first apartment compared to my apartment now. How hard it really is, to elevate. Especially when it’s just you and your partner. Of course I will take them to Portos and In’nout. Again, balance.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My fiancé! I think anyone can see how love for me, but his support?!? Anyone can see and feel it! He’s my rock and I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for him. He left his hometown and drove across the country with me. He takes me to all of my auditions, sends me good morning “good luck” texts and “you did amazing” night texts! He also takes every single photo on my Instagram and helps me with all of my content. He even helps me with my pitches when I want to work with certain brands. He is my biggest supporter and my core.
