We had the good fortune of connecting with Tamara Mckay and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tamara, what is the most important factor behind your success?
First, let me just mention that throughout this journey of becoming a successful makeup artist along with having own brand has not been an easy journey AT ALL! and its actually one of the most time consuming as in no work hours and hardest job I’ve ever had. I’ve had many nights of crying and wanting to give up because I was truly focused on the ones who didn’t support me, me not having a million followers on IG and just all the negatives on why i’m not successful like others . At that moment of feeling all these sad emotions I knew it was time to stop and take a hard look at myself and lots of praying on what is truly the most important factor behind my business/the success of my brand and thats when it came to me that whats going to be the success behind everything I’ve worked hard to achieve, was going to be ME fully believe in myself, even if no else did because no matter how hard things got ,I knew that God had a plan for my life and I have to believe that my purpose in life was already given to me and my faith had to be bigger than my fear. When you believe in yourself everything about your outlook on your success will change and it will be the most rewarding feeling. Every morning I tell myself “I am my success and I am my brand”
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
-My business is makeup artistry but over the years I’ve build solid relationships with many of my clients because I like to view makeup as an art form, treating each makeup application as unique as my clients themselves and that truly goes a long way in the beauty industry. I also enjoy the makeup classes I offer which are 1 on 1 and group classes. Makeup is not meant to change your beauty because you don’t need makeup to make you beautiful because true beauty comes from within but when its time to get glam then thats where I come in at and I enhance every god given natural beauty which is what I like to call #slaythetamway. No matter how many makeup artist there are in the world , I will never let that stop me from being the best version of me and living out my purpose. I take pride in my craftslay and i’m on this ride for a lifetime.
– Im very proud of how much I’ve grown and learned over the last 5yrs of my entrepreneurship journey but what i’m most proud about is creating my own beauty brand of lashes which I have named “Beauty&The Lashes”…because lashes matter!. Ok now I will proudly say that the start wasn’t easy at all especially because I had to learn everything on my own with the help of the bff google lol …but I do wish I had a mentor when I first started off. So my suggestion to anyone starting off is to seek a mentor to help you along the way with your ups and downs. You can’t go into the beauty industry solely for the money, this field requires true passion and dedication to your craft which will payoff.
– A few true lessons I’ve learned and still learning along the way is , to always bet on YOU, invest in your business, be ok with asking for help/asking questions, reading is truly fundamental, don’t compare where you are in life to anyone else’s, write everything down, drink water , pray and most importantly mind the business that pays you. Always remember that the journey can be hard but once you reach your destination it will be all worth It and you will be so proud of yourself for not giving up.
– What I want the world to know about me, my story and my brand would be that no matter how small you start thats one step from being to the top where you belong, so never let the fear be bigger than your faith. Tamara the makeup artist along with “Beauty & The Lashes” will be a household name and a brand thats not going anyone!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well being that i’m from California my top spots for would be Newport or Malibu Beach, Hollywood Blvd is a always eventful, Universal city/ city walk, Beverly Hills for shopping ,Griffith park and miracle mile just to name a few of my favs. For dinner I love Javier’s in Newport Beach or Century City and of course if you’re not from LA then Roscoes is a must. My two favorite hotels are the SLS & the W Hollywood. Also there are helicopter rides to view the whole city so that should be on your todo list for sure. LA is a great place to visit especially in the summer!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
From the bottom of my heart I’m very thankful for all my current clients, past clients and as well as any future clients who believes in my craft because without them my business would be in a much different place. Now ,there are two little humans who call me mom, my daughter Kennedy(17) & my son DJ(11). I would 100% dedicate this shoutout to my babies who are my biggest blessings and being there mom always reminds of my ‘WHY” and who i’m doing this for. They have been right beside me throughout my entire journey of building two successful brands that not only I can be proud of but they both be proud of as well. I thank both of them for being amazing kids who knows how much I love them and that after a storm theres always a rainbow.
