We had the good fortune of connecting with Tamra Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tamra, what do you want people to remember about you?
I want people to remember a time I made them laugh. Maybe it’s a sketch I wrote or a TikTok or a tweet or maybe it’s the time they passed me on the street in my fancy fur coat, riding an eScooter. I know I look ridiculous when I do that.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m excited about a couple sitcom pilots I wrote during quarantine. One of them takes place in L.A. (how unique!) and it involves the housing crisis. It goes into a fair amount of detail about why our lack of housing is such a complicated issue. It took me a decade to finally finish a pilot because I have that classic artist complex of giving up on a project if it’s not perfect. I had to learn to let things be messy and bad in order to eventually get to something I’m proud of. I’m a little embarrassed of how long that lesson took to sink in and also how long it took for me to find a productivity method that works for me. We all move at different paces. I’m very slow. Even on an eScooter.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh good god, I could go on forever! So let’s start with Hollywood Forever Cemetery. I want to be buried there. I love Angel’s Flight, Dodger Stadium, the Hollywood Reservoir, Kura Revolving Sushi, Wi Spa, the Tonga Hut, the Frolic Room, HMS Bounty, yoga at Runyon Canyon, yoga on the roof of the Roosevelt, Damon’s Steakhouse, paddle boarding in the marina, La Cita, Union Station, the vintage shops on Magnolia, Jumbo’s Clown Room, the Kibitz Room, the Barkley, and I know it’s a painful tourist trap but I do love the Santa Monica pier. Also, it’s not in the city but I have to mention the L.A. County Fair because it holds a special place in my heart. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to Hollywood American Legion Post 43 where I produced a comedy show for four years. They’re a really supportive organization. A lot of my favorite bits came from my sets there. Also, I would like to thank my TikTok followers. They keep me going with really kind, really amazing words of enthusiasm (and emojis of enthusiasm). for my comedy. It’s really easy to doubt yourself and doubt your instincts but I sometimes screenshot the comments that make me feel good and save them for those times when I need a boost.
