We had the good fortune of connecting with Tapio Antere and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tapio, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I always get excited about a little risk. It’s also nice experience to discover the failure. I mean usually after you fail in something you realize that the initial risk was smaller than you actually thought. Life goes on and nothing too bad followed. Usually what we are arfaid in taking a risk in life is actually causing a short term discomfort at the best if things go south. I haven’t been the riskiest guy out there, but I always enjoy the moment when Im ”jumping off the cliff” and figure out how to fly on the go.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Im balancing between still and motion picture. Currently im finalizing our 30min short film which we shot last summer. It will be a romantic thriller which im pretty thrilled about at the moment! I have been the biggest imposter syndrome victim in the past, but it’s been cool to find out how well audience has welcomed our work in the festivals. So I think my biggest obstacle in the past about growing as an creative person has been the infamous self critisism. It took me years to little by little over come it, but nowadays I’m actually enjoying to put my work out there. After this current short film project I think the future brings something about still photography. I haven’t really ”accomplished” anything professionally on that side yet so it would be cool to discover that world as well. Maybe a photo exhibition?? I enjoy creating strong moods in my work and I genuinely think for example mood is more important in film than a story. Strong mood sticks in your mind without understandable story, but vice versa not so much. So I guess my main goal in art is to create a strong mood for the viewer. Preferably with a good story though! I might get inspired from something as simple as rain or random sound somewhere so as long as I get a strong mood about something it’s a good enough reason for me to keep doing it. It would also be nice to create photo exhibition with sound design! That would be really cool!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in Helsinki so I hope you visit me in summer! Sauna would be of course on the menu! So maybe Sompa sauna in Sompasaari Helsinki and then dinner at Zetor! There’s also alot of islands in front of Helsinki where you can find beautiful Nature! Next days sauna would be at Löyly in Hernesaari!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There would be a whole book of names! But I think the first thanks go to my parents to be such an influence in my life. I’ve learned so much from both of them. Professionally I’d like to thank good friend and amazing actress Saana Laigren who has been a perfect co-minded partner in our film projects!
