We had the good fortune of connecting with Tara Danielle Dervin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tara, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
One piece of conventional advice that I vehemently disagree with is: “this is a tough cold world, a cut-throat business and that’s how it’s always been, that’s how it always will be and…THAT’S JUST THE WAY IT IS”

I say…that changes now. Let’s make Hollywood and the world a more loving, supportive place. Let’s replace a competition mindset with supporting one another.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am also CEO of my own production company Baruch HaShem Productions-which translates to Thank God Productions. Content based in gratitude. And if there is room to include I am currently producing a film and a music video right now. And having lots of fun!

I grew up in the theatre, acting as my first love. I’ve always had a passion for performance, storytelling, writing, creating-often in the spotlight on the stage and screen. In recent years post graduation from USC Drama and Cinema -I have found myself gravitating heavily toward producing as well. I always seek to be in empowered roles and have a say in how my image is represented, and it is my dream to be a strong female presence in Hollywood who helps create environments where everyone feels seen and heard, to help others to be empowered too. In response to this question I would like to share a poem I wrote about producing…

EVERY ARTIST IS A PRODUCER
By: Tara Danielle Dervin
“But I thought you were an actress,” they say.
As if being empowered gets in the way.
“Be careful what you post,” you KNOW, with agents, that can hurt you the most.
As if I would ever want to work with an agent who doesn’t support equality and love?
This is what true agency is.
Standing strong in your convictions.
Standing up for what is RIGHT.
And the good people will gravitate to the LIGHT.
I think Hollywood needs changed.
I’ll be the first to say.
So no I won’t live my life according to a previously established foundation.
A plastic sugary tree that’s been rotting from hellish corrupt roots from the beginning of time.
Every actress is a producer. And writer. And activist. And director. And HUMAN BEING.
Whether your platform is social media or a big blockbuster film, we all are producers in that we have a responsibility to use our words, ideas, gifts effectively. And with strength to do so even in the face of hardship. Don’t let someone else be in charge of YOUR FATE. So I’ve realized this started out as a poem and now seems to be a paragraph and to that I say-it’s ok-because I AM THE PRODUCER of this content. And you are the producer of yours. I used to wait by the phone all day, staring at it with fire in my eyes, trying to burn a hole in it with rage when those I wanted to did not call me back. I used to think that meant something was wrong with me. I prayed to God on this subject, and the answer came so clearly one day-through tears-Tara, the people meant for you will call you when the time is RIGHT. And you also have the POWER TO PICK UP THE PHONE, and call who YOU WANT! Have amazing conversations today that change the world. You are doing fantastic, and I don’t say this lightly, if you see this and ever want me to look over a project you’re working on PM me and I’ll give you my email address. I’d be happy to. THIS IS A CALL TO ACTION. ACTION BABY! 🎬

the most recent projects I did was directed by Adva Reichman for a PSA against gun violence, a play I co-produced and directed with Colleen Dunn Saftler called Dating Myself the Play, and I am co-producer on a pilot for children in Hollywood called Life Academy prod. and directed by Victor Migalchan/Movieverse Entertainment where they teach children about skills in mental physical and spiritual wellness while navigating the entertainment business-all causes I believe firmly in. I always enjoy working on projects with meaning!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This is such a fabulous question! Well you asked..and I will provide.

8:00 am: I will make a homemade breakfast of vanilla iced coffee, fruit, oatmeal and toast for my lovely guest and me. (You can find such meals posted on my new food account on IG: @peacewithfoodinhollywood.

9:00 am: We would go hiking at Runyon Canyon

11:00 am: Snack time. We would get the best freshest mango with chile from the nicest people ever who work at the fruit stands!

12:00 pm: We would go home and shower and do our hair and makeup (which I also love to do for my friends) and dress up and go en route to Santa Monica Pier.

1:30 pm: We would get lunch by the pier or at the promenade (I love the Cheesecake Factory there!) and then walk and shop through some of the promenade stores (Forever 21 is a favorite)

3:00 pm: We would go on their famous Ferris wheel, and take stunning photos with the LA sky in the backdrop and then lay out on the beach with a towel I would bring along (highly recommend so you don’t get sand in literally every crevice…although even with the towel..this will happen)…Depending on the time we would get there, it is an absolutely stunning place to watch the sunset with the horizon on the water. Heavenly.

Evening time/8:00 pm ish We would have to get AVOCADO ROLLS at The Grove: Blue Ribbon Sushi Bar is a great favorite where you can watch the famous fountains dance.

Perhaps then, we could end the night with a movie at the Grove Movie Theatre, or even better…..LIVE THEATRE OR COMEDY somewhere like THE COMEDY STORE, THE GROUNDLINGS, THE GEFFEN and beyond!

And that’s LA livin’ dahhhling…there’s more where that came from 🙂

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give credit to The One Above, my family, friends, teachers, mentors, and critics-ALL of whom make me who I am and continually make me want to work harder, to be better, and keep pushing boundaries for good.
