We had the good fortune of connecting with Tashiyanna Noel and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tashiyanna, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I was born in the inner city neighborhoods of Milwaukee, WI, and relocated to Highlands Ranch, an affluent suburb of Denver, during middle school. It was literally a 180 overnight because we went from one of the most dangerous cities in America, to, according to Forbes, Business Week and Money Magazine, one of the best places to live. It showed me what it really meant to have the cards stacked against you. And if my mother would have never relocated us I don’t think I would be the independent, self-reliant, ambitious woman I am today. I was always taught to believe that it is not about the cards you’re dealt but how you play your hand. However, it wasn’t until I saw how other people lived that I realized the hand you’re dealt may not be everything, but it absolutely influences how you play.

What should our readers know about your business?
As a business consultant, I help entrepreneurs and small to medium sized business increase profits by improving efficiency and brand optimization. As the founder of Mindwell Body + Soul, I encourage entrepreneurs and business owners to overcome everyday stress, anxiety and depression without the use of prescription drugs, but through holistic remedies and practical habits.

My journey to becoming an entrepreneur was not without challenges but it was an easy decision. Throughout my 14 years of employment I had carried several jobs in search of a career and every time I thought, “Ok, I can be happy doing this for 30 years” something would happen. I was fired for crying, fired for requesting lunch breaks, and also for not wanting to work 60+ hours/week. Florida is a right-to-work state so you can be terminated for almost anything. And I grew discouraged, until I saw Lisa Nichols in the documentary “The Secret”. She was talking about how powerful your mind is and what you think about yourself will become your reality. So, instead of telling myself I was too emotional, or too demanding and couldn’t keep a job. I started telling myself these rejections were redirections. I started looking at how I was unhappy in those positions and was settling for something because I was too afraid to branch out on my own. But I didn’t want to continue subjecting myself to scrutiny from people who would never truly value my work ethic because it came with opinions.

So I started my first company as a freelance graphic designer. But as I continued to learn more about business I realized my business model would have to change if I wanted to avoid working myself into an early grave. I started thinking of ways to make more money and work less hours. I know it sounds backwards and believe me I thought so too but as I partnered with CEO’s, COO’s and CFO’s I realized they were the highest paid employees because of their ideas and critical thinking skills. I determined very quickly that the key to working for yourself and retiring comfortably was to continuously be open to learning. It’s important to surround yourself with people that share your ideas, opinions and interests but also people you can learn from. And if those type of people are scarce, pick up a book, find a mentor, take a class on Udemy. In this day and age literally anything can be discovered online so instead of spending time scrolling on social media I became a lifetime learner.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I actually live in Orlando, Florida and am most familiar with the places there. I’m not a huge beach person, but walking around in a downtown area or around where all the food trucks park is my jam. So, I would start by visiting Boxy Park or Hall on the Yard for some good music, vibe and food. I love the farmer’s market at Lake Eola every Sunday. The produce, music and scenery is kind of unmatched as far as Farmers Market’s go. If the Black Health Commission throws an event I make it my business to attend. There’s nothing in the world like being around joyful black people and they seem to come out in droves to attend the BHC events. And while it’s not in Orlando, Sparkman Wharf is definitely worth the drive to Tampa. Also, while in Tampa check out Lolis. They have hands down the best tacos in Florida!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shoutout to Dr. Ramona Hunt and her team of nurses, Bengy and Lucy, who pushed me to keep going during my darkest days. My phenomenal therapist, Dr. Carol Watler, who has consistently and patiently provided me with guidance and understanding during my healing journey. And to my everyday support system: my mom, Pernell, Jullian, Alexia, Marvin, John, Tatiana and Melaina. Their support is the reason I have accomplished so much and made it as far as I have. I’ll never be able to thank them enough!
