We had the good fortune of connecting with Tatiana Parker and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tatiana, how do you think about risk?
I must take risks, I’ve always felt the pull toward this. I knew that what I wanted to do was unconventional so the only way to make it happen was to do something different. If we stay the same, nothing will ever change. The unknown can sometimes feel scary but personally, the idea of settling for less than what I desire feels far more daunting.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
It’s interesting to talk about what “sets me apart” because for so many years, as a dancer, we are told to fit a mold and match the group. I spent a long time trying to execute this type of cloning but it always irritated me. I never wanted to look like anyone else but if the job called for it, I would force myself to match the others. This is a skill, one I do not discredit or discourage, but the truth is I prefer to stand out rather than fit in. I had many inspirations growing up but I would always try to let the inspiration fuel something authentic within myself. Perhaps this is now what sets me apart? I still struggle with it at times. I try to allow myself the freedom to be myself, without inhibitions, and quiet the mind which often tries to compare and criticize my short-comings. Though I continue to work through these challenges, I am aware that they exist and when I am teaching, I try to encourage dancers to tap into their individuality. I focus on “feeling” rather than “steps” and let the music guide my movement. I believe that when we are connected to the sound, with an open heart and the absence of judgement, we are able to express fully & authentically.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh man! I am currently in Toronto, bundled up to keep warm during these cold months so I am very much missing sunny Los Angeles. Here’s what my ideal week back would look like; Wake up, step outside and soak in some rays. Grab a coffee at Andante (Echo Park), or Intelligentsia (Silverlake). Head on over to Elysian Park for a little hike. Work up a sweat and appetite then head over to Honey Hi (Echo Park) for a delicious healthy fix. Due to Covid, I would take the food to-go and sit on the grass by Echo Park Lake to eat. Post meal, I’d continue walking the neighborhood, saying hello to strangers, popping into whichever thrift shops are open and making some friends along the way. For lunch I might be in the mood for some Pine & Crane or perhaps a little Kismet. By midday I’d be searching Bandsintown to see if there were any live performances happening that week. The next day, I might hop on my bike and ride west toward hollywood. I’d reach Coffee Commissary (Fairfax) for some fuel and keep it pushing down Fairfax and Melrose for some window shopping. Next day would be dedicated to the beach. I’d first head to Clark Street Bakery (Echo Park) to grab a croissant and/or BLT , run across the street to Laveta (on Glendale) for an oat milk Cortado then drive toward the water without a specific destination in mind. As I approach, I’d keep an eye on the water and pull over whenever it feels right, typically wherever I see the least amount of humans. (I love people, but when it comes to nature, I prefer to be alone.) Throughout the week I’d be sure to stop by SUPERRICH for some bomb onigiris and delicious matcha latte, enjoy some wine on the patio at Semi-Tropic, a cocktail at Bar Calo and I’d be sure to make a Thursday night reso at Kensho Hollywood. By Sunday, I’d make my way to Atwater farmers market to grab some groceries. Always rushing to get what’s left of the fresh catches at Smart Fish Seafood and a couple patties & oxtail from The Caribbean Gourmet. Once my bags were full, I’d make a quick stop at Proof for a Cortado and baguette, drop my groceries at home then head back out to see where the day takes me. Oh LA, I miss you.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to shoutout my most impressionable mentor, Luther Brown. I had been taking his classes back in Toronto for many years and eventually was blessed with the opportunity to assist him for years to follow. What I love most about Luther is his authenticity and originality. In the dance industry, it’s very easy to get caught up in a hype and follow trends, this is never the case for Mr. Brown. He continues to lead by such a fine example of staying true to self. Not only have I always been inspired by his unprecedented skills and work ethic but also his heart. Luther stays laughing and making people smile. His ability to create a focused work environment while all the while keeping things fun and light creates such memorable moments. Love you, Luther!
