We had the good fortune of connecting with Tatyana Komaguchi “Guchi” and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tatyana, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Perhaps the funniest part about my response, as I’m in the middle of a risk I decided to take in order to bring to life a sketch that I believe in. Risks are in essential part of success. CEOs, business owners don’t become successful because they complied. They continue to take risks, and continuously failed until they were right.
How I feel at risk, is when there’s no end in sight. You don’t see the immediate pay off based on your finite deduction. So by nature risks are very intuitive, you have to believe that the decision that you’re making is the right one. I don’t find this difficult, and I’m wrong 99% of the time. But that 1%, this feeling of accomplishment, nothing can quite beat that feeling.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a standup comedian, sketch writer, and actor. You know when a passion is brewing inside of you. But we don’t all listen. I was a shadow artist for a long time. I did creative things in the secrecy of my own home, I only ever dreamed of being on stage. My circumstances started to align with what I thought was a dream. I took my first improv class after my office was moved next-door to the UCB. I met my girlfriend Rebecca who introduced me to stand up. And the rest will be history.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I definitely would take any friends coming to visit me to Venice Beach. Although rid of this homelessness at this moment, still a very beautiful place with an energy that reminds me of New York where I’m from. A little rundown a little luxury, 100% unique. Venice has the bars, The views, and of course the beach. I don’t think many things compared to the Sunset on the Gold Coast.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I had a really difficult time understanding this. My trauma response was to do everything on my own and laugh if off. I Have changed since meeting my partner. She’s a wonderful woman has taught me the true meaning of partnership, teamwork, and has built me up to be the entertainer and leader that I am today.
